SBA Emerging Leaders Initiative Returns April 22
Tuesday, February 04, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Registration has begun for the 2014 Emerging Leaders executive level training program to be held here for seven months beginning April 22 at Youngstown State University.
The goal of the program, which seeks 15 applicants, is to attract owners of established urban small businesses with high growth potential and to provide them with the knowledge and resources to build a sustainable business of size and scale.
This is the fourth consecutive year for the program in Youngstown. The course runs through October.

Economists Forecast More Recovery for Region in 2014
Tuesday, February 04, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The news about the regional and national economies is, for the most part, good and getting better. The consensus among economists is that the recovery is gaining strength.
Annual sales for U.S. automakers hit a six-year peak in 2013 and should be even higher this year. Sales of the Chevrolet Cruze, produced at Lordstown, slid in December but set a record of 248,224 units for the year, 10,466 above 2012.
All signs point to the continued strengthening of the U.S. dollar this year. The dollar gained roughly 5% in 2013 against foreign currencies.

McClendon's AEP Buys Rights to 130K Utica Acres
Tuesday, February 04, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Aubrey McClendon’s American Energy Partners confirmed Monday that it is buying drilling rights for 130,000 acres in the southern tier of Ohio’s Utica shale play.
The transactions include 74,000 acres that Hess Corp. disclosed last week it had sold to an unnamed buyer for $924 million. Purchase agreements have also been signed with Exxon Mobile Corp. and privately-held Paloma Partners, AEP confirmed.
Exxon affiliate XTO Energy said AEP has purchased the rights to drill on 30,000 of its acres in Ohio. Additional details were not disclosed.
2 Women’s Stores to Open at Southern Park Mall

General Motors Sales Down, Cruze Best-Ever for January
Monday, February 03, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Lordstown-build Chevrolet Cruze enjoyed its best January sales month in the model's history, General Motors Co. reported this morning.
Dealers took delivery on 16,828 Cruze units last month, up 15.9% from the 14,524 sold in January 2013 of the GM model. The Cadillac SRX also posted its best January ever, with 4,446 deliveries last month, up 1.5% from a year earlier.
Abdu Donates Medical Artifacts to YSU Melnick Museum
Monday, February 03, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Retired surgeon Dr. Rashid Abdu of Canfield has donated his collection of more than 50 medical artifacts, some dating to the 1730s, to the Rose Melnick Medical Museum at Youngstown State University.
“These items are impressive and will fill significant holes in the museum’s collection,” said Cassie Nespor, museum curator. “I want to thank Dr. Abdu for the donation. The items will be great for displays and exhibits.”
