Local Counties Share in Ohio Demolition Grants
Thursday, February 06, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- More than $3.8 million in additional demolition grants has been awarded to 87 Ohio counties including Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana, Attorney General Mike DeWine announces.
Columbiana County will receive $27,823, Mahoning County $76,504, and Trumbull County $63,468.
The additional grants were a reallocation of unrequested funds from DeWine’s office Moving Ohio Forward Program.
Breaking News: CHS to Acquire Sharon Regional
Wednesday, February 05, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Community Health Systems Inc. announced this morning that subsidiaries of the Tennessee-based company have executed a definitive agreement to acquire substantially all of the assets of Sharon Regional Health System in Sharon, Pa. Terms were not disclosed.
2013 Most Profitable in Covelli Centre's History
Wednesday, February 05, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Coming off the heels of the most successful event ever staged at the Covelli Centre -- Sir Elton John's return appearance Feb. 1 -- operators of city-owned arena report 2013 proved to be the most profitable year its eight-year history.
The arena saw an operational profit of $348,821 for calendar year 2013 and budgeted for a $360,000 gain, according an income statement released Thursday by the city's finance department.
Ryan Joins DNC Chair to Push Minimum Wage Hike
Wednesday, February 05, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Increasing the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour will generate economic growth, not inhibit it, U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan asserted Tuesday during a press event with U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Ryan and Wasserman Schultz joined Akron grocery worker Nicki Strong on a conference call with Ohio reporters. He argued that a federal minimum wage below Ohio’s current minimum wage, now at $7.95 per hour, is holding back the economy and workers.

Meridian Care Leaders Back Addiction Treatment Bills
Wednesday, February 05, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Two bills legislators in Columbus are studying were supported by testimony from representatives of Meridian Community Care during recent committee hearings, the agency reports.
Larry Moliterno, president and CEO, testified Jan. 8 before the House Health and Aging Committee on behalf of the Ohio Alliance of Recovery Providers. OARP, of which Moliterno is chairman, is a statewide alliance of treatment and prevention providers.
Mahoning Career Center Gets Vertical Milling Center
Wednesday, February 05, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- Students in the manufacturing technology/precision machining program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center have received a new Haas Toolroom Vertical Milling Center. The equipment will help them better prepare for the job market.
The equipment will allow students to learn how to operate a full-automated three-axis milling machine, said their instructor, Mike Lutz. The machine also will teach students the basics of writing in G-code and M-code, and tool offsetting and will be incorporated into junior- and senior-year coursework in the program.
CoreLogic Finds Valley House Prices Drop Slightly
Wednesday, February 05, 2014IRVINE, Calif. -- House prices in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman area dropped from December 2012 to December 2013, CoreLogic reports. Including distressed sales, prices fell 1.2%, and by 0.3% from November 2013 to December 2013.
Distressed sales include short sales and real estate owned transactions.
Month-over-month, house prices, including distressed sales, fell 0.3%% in December from November. Excluding distressed sales, prices rose 1.6%.
RN Seeks to Open Training Center in Masters Building
Tuesday, February 04, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A long-vacant South Side eyesore, the former Masters Tuxedo building, could see new life in the next half-year as a training center for certified nursing assistants and other health-care support staff.
Corey Kemp, a Youngstown resident and registered nurse, proposes to open Allied Health Training in the building at 3600 Market St., just north of Midlothian Boulevard. Before Masters Tuxedo occupied the building, its was the longtime home of Paul Morris Sporting Goodsr.
Ohio CSI Office Reviews 1,500 Rules in 2013
Tuesday, February 04, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio’s Common Sense Initiative Office reviewed more than 1,500 proposed rules in 2013, reports Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor, who oversees the office.
CSI released its annual report Monday, which included key findings and regulatory reform efforts for the past year. In the two years since Ohio’s business rules have been reviewed as part of CSI, business rule filings have slowed by 25% compared to the historical average. The CSI rule review process was initiated in 2012.
