Trumbull Planning Commission to Update Girard’s Plan
Friday, January 16, 2015GIRARD, Ohio -- Mayor James Melfi says he is looking forward to the recommendations the Trumbull County Planning Commission will make regarding the former Girard Leatherworks property and land adjacent to Vallourec Star as part of an update to the city’s comprehensive plan.
City Council recently voted to enter into a contract with the planning commission to do the plan, a process that will begin with an update of city data in the coming months. The updated comprehensive plan is expected to be finished in November 2017, the planning commission says.
Mercy Health Opens Heart Valve Clinic at St. E's
Friday, January 16, 2015YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, recently opened a heart valve clinic at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
The clinic, on the first floor of the hospital and easily accessible from its main entrance, was developed after a review of echocardiograms suggested that a high percentage of patients in the Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties have severe valvular heart disease.
Regional Chamber, YSU Lead 10-County Export Initiative
Thursday, January 15, 2015YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – A new global trade initiative that involves 10 counties in northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania will get underway later this month, the Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber announced Thursday.
The OH-PA Stateline Export Initiative is the culmination of six months of planning spearheaded by the chamber and the International Trade Assistance Center at Youngstown State University. The two organizations melded their international trade efforts to create a worldwide trade strategy that would turn the Mahoning Valley into a more formidable economic engine.
Second Harvest Distributes Record Amount of Food
Thursday, January 15, 2015YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley distributed 9.5 million pounds of food -- the equivalent of more than 6.3 million meals -- to hungry people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties last year, the agency reported this morning. The past year represented the fourth consecutive year that distribution exceeded nine million pounds, with an increase of 368,000 pounds over 2013.
“We are pleased in our efforts to meet the need, but saddened that the need is so great,” said Mike Iberis, Second Harvest executive director.

Some Building Owners Slip on Their Sidewalk Duties

Mowen was here to take her two children to the Oh Wow! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology. Nearly falling as she walked the two blocks from her car to Oh Wow!, the Austintown resident says she was surprised at the poor conditions of the sidewalks.
“They were covered with ice. It was slippery,” she remarked. “I didn’t want my 2-year old walking because I knew she would fall down so I carried her.”
Ankle & Foot Care Donates Shoes to Salvation Army
Thursday, January 15, 2015BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Since the beginning of November, all 19 Ankle & Foot Care Centers have been collecting shoes to donate to the Salvation Army and on Wednesday more than 500 pairs were given to the charity. The chain of podiatric office also collected socks to donate.
“People don't always have the resources to get decent shoes, so we're trying to not only care for their feet medically, but to give them the necessary shoes and socks,” Ankle & Foot Care operations manager Elizabeth Emch said.
