Steel Imports’ Market Share Drops in February
Monday, April 01, 2013WASHINGTON -- Preliminary Census Bureau data show that in Februdry the United States imported 2,441,000 net tons of steel, including 1,819,000 net tons of finished steel. The figures are down 7% and 15%, respectively, compared with year-ago final totals.
Year-to-date net tons and finished steel imports are 5,058,000 and 3,963,000 net tons, respectively, down 9% and 8% versus 2012, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute.
ShaleNet Aids Mahoning, Columbiana Counties
Monday, April 01, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Mahoning and Columbiana counties are Ohio’s biggest beneficiaries of a federally funded on-the-job training (OJT) program focused on the shale natural gas industry.
Nearly 50 workers at nine companies participated in the ShaleNet OJT program through the Mahoning & Columbiana Training Association and One-Stop Workforce System of Mahoning and Columbiana Counties. The average wage of participating workers was $16.60 an hour. The average benefit to the employer was $3,148.69 per covered employee.

Rare Photos of Hubbard Furnaces on Display
Monday, April 01, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- An exhibit of rare photographs of the former steel furnaces in Hubbard opens Thursday at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor here. Admission is free.
The exhibit, “Iron Valley: A Century of Change at Hubbard Furnace,” begins with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The show features 32 rare photos from the 1870s to the 1960s of furnaces that produced iron in the Mahoning Valley for nearly a century. The photos capture the evolution of the Mahoning Valley in both iron-making technology and labor at the Hubbard furnace.
