SBA Report Documents Dominance of Small Firms

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- There are nearly 28.5 million small businesses operating in the United States and of that total, 926,977 are operating in Ohio, 999,591 in Pennsylvania.
The numbers come from the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy, which has released reams of data showing half of the nation’s private workforce is employed by companies with fewer than 500 employees.

Chamber Praises Senators for Efforts to Aid YARS

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber praised Ohio’s two U.S. senators for their efforts to get funds for the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in President Barack Obama’s recently outlined budget.
The White House budget, unveiled last week, includes $9.4 million for the Youngstown Air Reserve Station indoor firing range. In December, U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, and Rob Portman, R-Ohio, urged the U.S. Air Force to provide funding for the base.

Memorable Meals Event Set for April 26 at Stambaugh

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Feb. 16 for the second annual Memorable Meals Mahoning Valley. This year’s event will take place 2-5 p.m. April 26 in the recently renovated Grand Ballroom at Stambaugh Auditorium.
The event, themed “Dining Across Cultures,” will feature local cuisine from a variety of cultures. Selections will include pierogis, spinning bowl salads, Italian greens, corned beef, hot peppers, pulled pork, crème sticks and much more.
Chamber Opens Black & White Gala to Nonprofits

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown Warren Regional Chamber will open its annual fundraising event, the Black & White Gala, to all of its member 501(c)(3), nonprofit organizations via a grant application process.
A selection committee will review applications from chamber members with 501(c)(3) designations and narrow those down to three finalists. The three selected organizations will have the opportunity to present more information about their proposals to the committee that will vote on a winner.
EQT Writes Off Assets in Eastern Ohio's Utica

PITTSBURGH -- EQT Corp. reports that the initial wells the company drilled in eastern Ohio's Utica shale determined that projected oil and gas recovery from the rock was "significantly below our expectations," forcing the company to write off its Utica acreage to the tune of $162 million.
Most of the acreage is in Guernsey County, where other energy companies have developed successful wells and drilling programs, officials said during a conference call Thursday. The company also has leasehold postitions in Jefferson County.
Canfield City, Township Advance JEDD for Project

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Canfield Mayor Bernie Kosar Sr. expects his City Council and the Canfield Township Board of Trustees to each hold meetings Wednesday to approve a proposed agreement between the entities that would allow Windsor House Inc. to move forward on construction of a skilled nursing and rehabilitation center in the township.
The city and township have a “tentative agreement” to establish a Joint Economic Development District at the site of the proposed 72-bed center that both entities will have to formally approve, Kosar said this morning.
Foreclosures, Delinquencies Decline in November

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Foreclosure rates in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area declined in November 2014 from the same period the year before, CoreLogic reports.
