Northeast Ohio Gas Prices Show Rise in AAA Index

PITTSBURGH -- Gas prices in Northeast Ohio jumped 15 cents over the past week, as national prices reversed the downward trend that had been the norm in recent months.
AAA East Central’s Fuel Gage report put the price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Northeast Ohio at $2.045 this week, up from $1.893 during the week of Jan. 28 although down from $3.323 during the week of Feb. 4, 2014.
In Youngstown, the average price for a gallon of unleaded self-serve regular is $1.987, AAA reports. In Niles, the price is $2.017.
Brown, Ryan Praise Funding for YARS, More Hubs

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown and U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan each hailed President Obama’s inclusion of $9.4 million in his 2016 fiscal year budget for Youngstown Air Reserve Station to upgrade its indoor firing range.
“This funding will ensure that Ohio airmen are equipped with the skills and training they need to perform their critical national security missions,” Brown, D-Ohio, said.
Cortland Tops List of Places to Retire in Ohio

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Three Mahoning Valley communities were ranked among the 10 best places to retire in Ohio by SmartAsset. Topping the list was Cortland, followed by Youngstown. Canfield placed fifth on the list.
The main factors the list considered are taxes (income and sales combined); number of doctors’ offices; and opportunity for recreation and a social life.
New Warehouse Enables B.J. Alan to Double Capacity

WARREN, Ohio -- B.J. Alan Co. has positioned itself for explosive growth, three years after the consumer fireworks company purchased a portion of the former Delphi Packard Electrical Corp. complex on Larchmont Avenue.
"Welcome to the largest fireworks warehouse in the United States," says William Weimer, vice president of B.J. Alan, as he greets visitors. The company uses about 750,000 square feet between two interconnected warehouses to store hundreds of thousands of cases of fireworks cases each year.

Talmer Reports 4Q Net Income of $12.5 Million

TROY, Mich. -- Talmer Bancorp Inc., holding company of Talmer Bank and Trust, reports fourth-quarter net income of $12.5 million, or 16 cents per diluted share, and full-year net income of $90.85 million, or $1.30 a share.
These figures compare to third-quarter net income of $19.52 million, or 26 cents per share, fourth-quarter 2013 income of $12.55 million, or 18 cents a share, and full-year 2013 income of $98.56 million, or $1.41 per diluted share.
TNP Spends $560K to Improve Quality of Life

WARREN, Ohio -- The Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership spent 2014 “returning derelict vacant properties to productive use,” helping residents become homeowners, restoring houses, encouraging urban farms and more healthful diets, its executive director, Matt Martin says.
In its 12-page annual report, released Friday, the partnership recapped its community outreach efforts, urban farm activities, and work with the Trumbull County Land Bank as it razed dilapidated vacant houses, improved and restored other houses, and helped Warren residents become homeowners.
Ohio Society of CPAs Posts Videos on Tax Filing

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Society of Certified Professional Accountants is offering tips on filing tax returns on two new videos intended to help individual filers and business owners.
The videos explore deductions and credits that taxpayers might be unaware of, says OSCPA spokeswoman Jennifer Rieman. There is no charge to watch the videos.
