BWC Sends Message: It Has More Resources to Pursue Fraud
Thursday, July 15, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- As it steps up its investigative efforts, the Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation is discovering more instances of employer fraud as it sees employee fraud begin to decline.The bureau is increasing the funds saved the state treasury, 23.71% more in 2003 over 2002. Last year the BWC's anti-fraud team saved the state $126.2 million compared to $102.1 million in 2002, Tom Wersell said Wednesday.

The relocation from the company's store on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown is the first step in a planned national expansion, Stover says.The new Boardman store, located at 4150 Market St., will include a cafe that offers pastries as well as the company's gourmet chocolate.

Trumbull County to Receive Housing Grant
Thursday, July 15, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Trumbull County will receive a $10,000 grant to assist with fair housing efforts. "This assistance will help Trumbull County educate and update the public about fair housing laws and regulations," says Bruce Johnson, director of the Ohio Department of Development. The county, with the assistance of the Warren-Trumbull County Urban League, will use the funds to expand its fair housing education and outreach program by distributing relevant materials and promotional items, Johnson says. The Urban League's mission is to promote racial harmony and equality."
Ohio Highway Litter Exceeds 11,700 Tons Annually"
Thursday, July 15, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- More than 11,700 tons of plastic bags, beverage containers, auto parts and other materials are intentionally dumped along Ohio roadways each year, according to an Ohio Department of Natural Resources study. The effort to clean up this litter costs Ohio taxpayers at least $2.3 million annually, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation, which cooperated in the study."This is Ohio's first in-depth highway litter study in 20 years," says ODNR Director Sam Speck.

Mortgage Rates Inch Higher
Thursday, July 15, 2004NEW YORK -- Fixed mortgage rates inched higher amid evidence of moderate economic growth, according to Bankrate.com's weekly national survey of large lenders. The average 30-year fixed rate mortgage increased from 6.08% to 6.11%, and the 30-year fixed rate mortgages had an average of 0.29 discount and origination points.The 15-year fixed rate mortgage popular for refinancing nosed higher from 5.48% to 5.5%, according to Bankrate.com. The average rates for the jumbo 30-year fixed rate mortgage and one-year adjustable rate mortgage both increased 2 basis points to 6.3% and 4.35%, respectively.
