Teamsters Settle Contract Dispute with Vindicator

That's what it took for members of Teamsters Local 437 to "overwhelmingly" ratify a new one-year contract with The Vindicator that includes a 15% co-pay for health insurance premiums.The vote -- the final tally was not disclosed -- was taken Sunday morning at Irish Bob's.

Saturday, January 08, 2005YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The president of Home Savings and Loan Co., David Lodge, survived the tsunami that devastated so much of southeast Asia Dec. 26 and is working to support the relief effort, The Valley Voice reports in this week's edition.Lodge, his wife, and two teenage daughters were on vacation on the resort of Phuket Island, Thailand,reporter Peggy Sinkovich writes, when "a native fisherman began yelling for the family to leave" the beach and return to their hotel."By the time we reached the steps of the hotel, the first wave hit," Lodge told Sinkovich.

Gerhart Named Head of Shenango Valley Chamber

Gerhart, coordinator of the graduate program at the Shenango campus of Penn State University, has been named executive director and chief executive officer of the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce, Jerry Nighswander announces.Gerhart, a resident of Sharon, assumes his duties in late January, Nighswander said. Nighswander is president of the chamber. Gerhart, a graduate of Penn State, has been an administrator 35 years at its Shenango and Fayette campuses. At the latter he was coordinator of its graduate program.
Ryan Blasts Removal of Veterans Affairs Chairman

Tim Ryan of Niles, D-17th Ohio, yesterday criticized the Republican leadership in the House of Representatives for removing Christopher Smith as chairman of the House Veterans Affairs Committee."Another voice of reason has been removed from a leadership role in the House of Representatives, and the men and women who have so honorably served their country will pay the price," Ryan said Thursday.Smith, R-4th N.J., was also removed from the committee of which he was a member 24 years and had chaired the last four.
City Gets More Time to File Objections in Open Records Suit
Friday, January 07, 2005YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The city of Youngstown has been granted an additional 60 days to object to a court's finding that the city violated open records laws and that it must pay legal fees incurred by The Business Journal resulting from the suit it filed more than a year ago.Mahoning County Common Pleas Magistrate Eugene Fehr gave the city until March 7 to file written objections to his ruling of Dec. 22. Under Ohio law, written objections to the magistrate's decision are due 14 days after the judgment is filed.While the ruling was issued Dec.

Friday, January 07, 2005COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Browning Ferris Industries of Ohio Inc. will pay a civil penalty of $261,396 under a consent decree it signed with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the state attorney general's office regarding its landfill at 9960 South Range Road, Salem.Under the agreement, BFI assures the Ohio EPA that it will comply with environmental regulations by establishing new closing requirements at the site and improving its operations.
