Home Savings President Escapes Tsunami
"YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The president of Home Savings and Loan Co., David Lodge, survived the tsunami that devastated so much of southeast Asia Dec. 26 and is working to support the relief effort, The Valley Voice reports in this week's edition.Lodge, his wife, and two teenage daughters were on vacation on the resort of Phuket Island, Thailand, reporter Peggy Sinkovich writes, when "a native fisherman began yelling for the family to leave" the beach and return to their hotel."By the time we reached the steps of the hotel, the first wave hit," Lodge told Sinkovich. "It took out half the hotel."The Valley Voice quotes Lodge on how the Thais and tourists responded and how, lacking electricity, they worked heroically in transforming the hotel lobby into an infirmary to treat the victims. "I cannot stress how wonderful the people are there," Lodge said. "They were more worried about their guests than about themselves."While the Lodges were taken to an area of Thailand that escaped the tsunami before returning home, many Thais lost everything. "The financial need is great," Lodge commented. Home Savings will set up a charity to help the victims who survived the disaster, he said. The Valley Voice, which published its eighth issue Friday, is the publication of the Youngstown Newspaper Guild, which struck The Vindicator Nov. 16.It is distributed to some 45,000 homes in the Mahoning Valley and is available at area newsstands. The online edition will be posted Jan. 10.Visit The Valley Voice at www.valleyvoiceonline.com"
