House Committee Votes to Extend Base Closing Timetable
Thursday, May 13, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The community campaign to save the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna Township stands to benefit from an amendment passed yesterday by the U.S. House Armed Services Committee that would postpone the 2005 round of military base closings until 2007. The vote came in the form of an amendment to the 2005 Fiscal Year Defense Authorization Bill. U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio 17, is a member of the Armed Services Committee and voted in favor of the amendment.

Bush and John Kerry campaigns have been showing commercials since March.

Thursday, May 13, 2004LIBERTY Township, Ohio -- The Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corporation is now offering U.S. Small Business Administration section 504 loans to businesses located in Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties in Pennsylvania.Small businesses can access long-term, fixed-rate financing through MVEDC for the purchase of real estate, construction of buildings and equipment acquisition. The SBA loan program, known as 504, offers borrowers a low down payment, competitive fixed interest rates and a long term.Since 1981, MVEDC has assisted 123 companies to obtain $34 million through the SBA program.
Penn State Erie Campus to Build $30 Million Center
Thursday, May 13, 2004ERIE, Pa. -- Ground was broken at the Penn State University Behrend Campus for a new academic building that will be home to both the Sam and Irene Black School of Business and the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology. Construction of the new $30 million Research and Economic Development Center, known as the REDC, will begin this summer.When completed in 2006, the center will strategically support education, research, and technology transfer activities designed to strengthen the economy of northwestern Pennsylvania.
Ohio AG Sues Platinum Warranty Corp.
Thursday, May 13, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- State Attorney General Jim Petro yesterday filed suit in Cuyahoga County on behalf of consumers against the Platinum Warranty Corp., alleging that the company did not honor its automotive warranties.Consumers in Ohio and in various states have filed over 140 complaints against the Platinum Warranty, located on Rockside Road in Cleveland. The complaints state Platinum sold motor vehicle warranties and failed to deliver all of the contracted services or refund the consumers' money.

"I'm trying to touch all the bases," he said in an interview following the Board of Commissioners' regular meeting. At the meeting, Robert L. Ferguson, chairman of the board of directors for Southside Community Development Corp., submitted a letter asking the county to hire an outside consultant to analyze any proposals submitted for the project.
