Steel & Alloy Receives Joan Kovach Safety Award
Thursday, May 15, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Steel & Alloy Utility Products Inc., a family-owned business in McDonald, received the Joan Kovach Safety Leadership Award Wednesday from the Mahoning Valley Safety Council.
Co-owner and Vice President Nick Gallo accepted the honor and shared credit with Steel & Alloy safety coordinator Tom Miles, who began the program in 1999.
The other three finalists for the eighth annual Kovach award were the Mahoning Valley chapter of the American Red Cross in Liberty, Magna Seating in Lordstown and Roof Rite Inc. in Boardman.

US Senate Confirms Jay Williams as EDA Director
Wednesday, May 14, 2014WASHINGTON -- Jay Williams, former mayor of Youngstown, was confirmed today by the U.S. Senate to serve as head of the U.S. Economic Development Administration.
Williams, who stepped down as mayor in 2011 to serve as director of the Department of Labor’s Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, was confirmed on a voice vote just before 12:30 p.m. His title is assistant commerce secretary for economic development. President Obama nominated Williams to the post last year.
Kasich Re-election at 50% Mark in Quinnipiac Poll
Wednesday, May 14, 2014HAMDEN, Conn. -- Ohio Gov. John Kasich is at or over the critical 50 percentage point mark on a number of measures, including his 50% to 35% lead over Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, his Democratic challenger, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.
This compares to a 43% to 38% Kasich lead in a Feb. 19 survey by the independent Quinnipiac University.
583,000 Steel Jobs at Risk from OCTG Imports
Wednesday, May 14, 2014WASHINGTON -- A newly released report shows up to 583,000 American steel-related jobs -- including 33,900 jobs in Ohio in communities such as Youngstown, Warren, Niles and Brookfield -- could be at risk if the United States doesn’t fully enforce trade laws.
The report, conducted by the Economic Policy Institute for the Alliance for American Manufacturing and released Tuesday, comes as the U.S. Department of Commerce considers whether it will impose trade remedies on unfairly subsidized and dumped oil country tubular goods imports from South Korea.

Meeting on 20 Federal Sale Draws Single Attendee
Wednesday, May 14, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Slim attendance at a pre-proposal meeting to provide information about 20 Federal Place, which the city wants to sell for $2 million, isn’t necessarily an indicator of potential interest in the building, the city’s finance director says.
Just one party – the Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp. – sent a representative to the informational meeting Tuesday morning. Interested parties have until noon June 6 to submit development proposals for the eight-story building.
