7 High School Seniors Given DeBartolo Scholarships
Friday, May 16, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- They might be only 17 but in their 17 years these seven high school seniors have taken on challenges that would daunt most of their peers and overcome adversity.
Victoria Armour, Brea Brazzon, Bridgette Kelly, Mary Kenney, Christian Parks, Caleb Roth and Martin Strong, this year’s winners of Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Scholarships, will head for college this fall, each helped by an $8,000 grant they received Thursday at the 17th annual scholarship luncheon at Antone’s Banquet Center.
Second Tech Belt Summit Draws Larger Crowd
Friday, May 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Tech Belt Technology Summit held at Youngstown State is gaining momentum as evidenced by this year's turnout, says its core sponsor.
"It's bigger," relates Mike Meloy, president of Data Recovery Systems LLC here. "We have a lot more sponsors."
Last year, Meloy reports, the inaugural event was a great success that drew a strong turnout across the community. "Vendors saw that,” he said. “They were happy with what they saw, so it's expanded."
Ohio Records Increase in New Business Filings
Friday, May 16, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A total of 8,970 entities filed to do business in the Buckeye State in April, the office of Ohio secretary of state reported Thursday. This marks an increase over April 2013, when 8,539 filings were recorded.
From January through April, 33,774 filings were recorded -- a slight increase from the same period last year when there were 32,504 filings.

McNally Minimizes Charges; 'I've Been Proven Correct'
Thursday, May 15, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Mayor John A. McNally IV today dismissed the 34 felony and misdemeanor charges in an indictment handed down by a Cuyahoga County grand jury Wednesday afternoon.
As a crew from John’s Tree and Stump Removal Ltd., New Springfield, worked on clearing away a 50-year-old tree that had fallen on his Burma Drive house during last night’s storms, McNally characterized the indictment of him, Mahoning County Auditor Mike Sciortino and attorney Marty Yavorcik as “a rehashing” of the saga involving the county’s purchase of Oakhill Renaissance Place.
Huntington Bank to Purchase 13 Offices in Michigan
Thursday, May 15, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Huntington Bancshares Inc., holding company of Huntington National Bank, announced Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with Bank of America to buy 13 more of its branches in Michigan.
This follows an earlier agreement where Bank of America will sell 11 branches to Huntington, the banks said.
Terms of the sale were not disclosed. Huntington will acquire some $500 million in deposits and pay a premium of 3.5% based on the deposit balances when the transaction closes at some date in the second half. No loans were included in the purchase.
Region Ranks Second-Best in House Affordability
Thursday, May 15, 2014OUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, Ohio-Mercer County, Pa. metropolitan statistical area remained near the the top of the U.S. housing affordability chart in the first quarter. In all, families who earned the regional median income of $63,900 could afford 65.5% of new and existing houses sold here between Jan. 1 and end of March 31.
This is slightly higher from the 64.7% sold that were affordable to median-income earners in the fourth quarter.
