The dumbest, for the third year in a row, is New Mexico.These are the findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by Morgan Quitno Press of hundreds of public school systems in all 50 states. States were graded on a variety of factors based on how they compare to the national average. These included such positive attributes as per-pupil expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, student reading and math proficiency, and pupil-teacher ratios.

Ohio Files First Do Not Call Lawsuit
Monday, October 18, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Consumer Grants USA recently became the defendant in Ohio's first lawsuit for violations of the state's Do Not Call law, reports state Attorney General Jim Petro. The Consumer Protection Section of his office, he said, has received numerous complaints about the Florida-based company.The lawsuit alleges that the company defrauded consumers by soliciting sales over the telephone after the consumers were signed up on the Do Not Call registry for the allotted 90 days and had no previous business relationship with the company.

KeyCorp Completes Acquisition of EverTrust Financial Group
Monday, October 18, 2004CLEVELAND -- KeyCorp has completed its acquisition of EverTrust Financial Group Inc. of Everett, Wash., officials announced earlier today. The acquisition will add $770 million in assets, 12 banking offices and two commercial mortgage loan production offices to Key's Seattle-Cascades Washington District.Under the terms of the agreement, EverTrust shareholders received an aggregate price of approximately $195 million, or $25.6016 cash per EverTrust common share.
