Opera Western Reserve Takes First Bow with 'Pagliacci'
Friday, October 22, 2004By Dennis LaRueYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Opera Western Reserve, the newly formed offshoot of the Youngstown Opera Guild, will present Pagliacci at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 12, in Stambaugh Auditorium.The one performance of the two-act work written in 1892 by Ruggiero Leoncavallo will constitute Opera Western Reserve's first season.A donation of $15,000 from the Italian Scholarship League makes up the bulk of this season's cash budget of $25,000. Other arts groups are providing in-kind support or working without remuneration.
Steelworkers' Union Calls for SEC Investigation of RTI
Friday, October 22, 2004PITTSBURGH -- The United Steelworkers of America have asked the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate whether titanium producer RTI International Metals, Niles, Ohio, violated federal securities law by failing to notify shareholders how much RTI's recent modification of its supplemental executive retirement plan will cost the company, union officials announced yesterday. The apparent effect of the modification is to substantially increase the retirement benefits of Timothy Rupert, RTI chief executive officer.

Zell Miller, D-Ga., in the Youngstown Club Friday were 10 people holding "Democrats for Bush" signs as Miller assailed the Democratic Party's nominee for president, John Kerry, and his record in the U.S. Senate.Following Miller's remarks, a reporter asked the 10 against the wall, standing behind the senator, how many are registered Democrats living in the Mahoning Valley.Only former state Rep. Mike Verich, who introduced Miller, acknowledged that he is a registered Democrat. Only he responded that he resides in the Mahoning Valley.
Stoneridge Nets $3.9 Million for Third Quarter
Friday, October 22, 2004WARREN, Ohio -- Net income for the third quarter at Stoneridge Inc. was $3.9 million, or 17 cents per diluted share, officials reported yesterday. Net income for the third quarter of the previous year was $3.1 million, or 14 cents per diluted share.For the current quarter, net sales were $164.3 million compared with $140.8 million for the year-ago quarter. As was the case in the previous two quarters, the increase in sales was primarily due to stronger performance in the company's served commercial vehicle markets.
Net Income Tops $46 Million at Sky Financial Group

Friday, October 22, 2004WARREN, Ohio -- Expansion of wholesale mortgage origination operations into high-growth markets and the acquisition of Franklin Bancorp fueled a 5.5% increase in net income for First Place Financial Corp. (NASDAQ:FPFC) during the first fiscal quarter of 2005, the company reported late Thursday.First Place reported net income for the quarter ended Sept. 30 of $4.8 million compared to $4.5 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2004. Earnings per share 33 cents compared with 33 cents reported for the prior-year period.
