Sales of Houses Up Across Ohio
Wednesday, October 23, 2013COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The number of houses sold across Ohio increased 18.9% in September as the market posted year-over-year gains in activity for the 27th consecutive month, the Ohio Association of Realtors announced Monday.
Sales in the 17-county region that includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties rose 18.1%.
Downtown Business Alliance to Meet Oct. 29
Wednesday, October 23, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- DBAY, the Downtown Business Alliance of Youngstown, will meet at 5 p.m. Oct. 29 in First National Tower to discuss the projects it should work on.
The meeting will be held in the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber board room on the 17th floor.
On the agenda are presentations by Tom DeAngelo of the Youngstown Economic Development Office, patrolman William Burton of the Youngstown Police Department, and downtown director of events Lyndsey Hughes, said Richard Hahn, president of Keynote Media Group LLC and who sits on the DBAY steering committee.
History Exhibit Examines Mahoning Valley Disasters
Wednesday, October 23, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- “Disasters in Mahoning Valley History,” a new exhibition at the Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor, opens today at 4 p.m.
The cases feature four disasters significant in area history: the Great Flood of 1913, the Thanksgiving Day snowstorm of 1950, the Wheatland tornado of 1985 and “Black Monday,” Sept. 19, 1977, the day Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. announced it was retrenching its operations here.
Portman Touts Camp Ravenna for Missile Defense
Tuesday, October 22, 2013RAVENNA, Ohio -- U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, today visited the Camp Ravenna Joint Military Training Center here to see firsthand the “unique advantages that make it an optimal location” for a proposed Ground-Based Midcourse Defense site.
Also today, Portman sent a letter to Vice Admiral James Syring, the director of the Missile Defense Agency, thanking the agency for its consideration of Camp Ravenna.
Columbiana Port Authority Grants Pipeline Easements
Tuesday, October 22, 2013EAST LIVERPOOL, Ohio -- The Columbiana County Port Authority granted easements and rights of way Monday night to Arrowhead Utica Pipeline L.P. and Sunoco Pipeline L.P. to install and maintain pipelines, one near the Wellsville Intermodal Facility outside of Wellsville, the other in Boardman Township on a plat crossed by the old Youngstown & Southern Railroad.
Afzal Joins Boards of UCFC, Home Savings

Afzal, most recently senior executive vice president of Huntington National Bank where he was its chief information officer, has more than 26 years of experience as a senior information technology and business executive, UCFC said.

Unit Sales, Dollar Volume Up in 3 Counties
Tuesday, October 22, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The number of homes sold during September in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties was up nearly 24% from a year earlier, and the total paid for those homes sold was up by more $12 million, or more than a third, over the same period, monthly statistics released Monday show. Unit sales for the month were on par with August’s, while dollar volume was up more than $1.7 million.
Area Foreclosures See Decline in August
Tuesday, October 22, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Foreclosures in the region declined by more than a full percentage point in August from a year earlier, CoreLogic reports. The rate of foreclosures in the metropolitan area, which covers Mahoning and Trumbull counties in Ohio and Mercer County in Pennsylvania, was 3.48% in August, down from 4.61% in August 2012. CoreLogic tracks and provides financial data for the real estate market.
