Chocolate, Olive Oil Top Favorite Specialty Foods
Monday, February 24, 2014NEW YORK -- Consumers are choosing specialty foods over conventional foods at record levels as nearly 75% made such purchases last year, the Specialty Food Association reports. That's a big increase from 2009, when only 46% bought this type of product.
The Specialty Food Association, established in 1952, is a nonprofit trade association for food artisans, importers and entrepreneurs to foster commerce and interest in their industry. It claims a membership of more than 3,000 in the United States and abroad.

Regional Real Estate Market Defies Statewide Decrease
Friday, February 21, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The number of houses sold during January in the reporting area that includes the Mahoning Valley rose 1.6% from the same period in 2013, despite a 5.1% decrease statewide, the Ohio Association of Realtors reported this morning.
Last month, 2,247 single-family units, condominiums and co-ops were sold in the 17 counties that compose the Northeast Ohio Real Estate Exchange, known as NEOHREX, which includes Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties. That was up from the 2,211 residential units sold in January 2012.
YSU Trustees Huddle as Tressel Campaign Grows
Friday, February 21, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The trustees of Youngstown State University met in executive session Thursday, a lengthy meeting to discuss personnel and employment that began at 3:25 p.m. and wasn’t expected to end until 7 p.m. or so.
The focus of the trustees’ discussion, believed to be the president, Randy J. Dunn, sat with them at the outset of the closed-door meeting but then stood in the hall outside talking with YSU general counsel Holly Jacobs before sitting and chatting with the audience as staff, students and reporters waited for the trustees to reconvene.
YSU Trustees Prepare to Raise Tuition 2.4% to 3%
Friday, February 21, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Undergraduate students at Youngstown State University should expect to see a tuition hike of 2.4% next fall while graduate students should prepare for a 3% increase.
The finance and facilities committee of the YSU Board of Trustees approved the increases Thursday and the full board will vote on its recommendation March 12.
A spokesman for YSU pointed out that tuition there will remain the lowest among the 11 public comprehensive universities in Ohio even with the hike. The increases are projected to raise $2 million in additional revenues.
East Liverpool City Hospital to Merge with HMHP
Friday, February 21, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Humility of Mary Health Partners and River Valley Health Partners, which operates East Liverpool City Hospital in East Liverpool, have entered into “a letter of intent to fully integrate with one another,” officials announced late Thursday.
Pending regulatory approval and final acceptance of the terms, the merger is expected to occur this summer, officials said.
Wean Foundation Awards $100K to 27 Organizations
Friday, February 21, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- The Raymond John Wean Foundation has awarded nearly $100,000 in grants to 27 grassroots community organizations and student-led groups in Youngstown and Warren, Acting President Jennifer Roller announced Thursday.
The grants range from the maximum of $5,000, awarded to 11 recipients, to the $1,420 awarded to Cornerstone Youth Initiative, a community collaborative in Youngstown.
