MVMC, Chamber Call for Drug-Testing Students
Wednesday, September 17, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition and the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber today called for drug-testing of students in industry-related training programs.
Letters jointly signed by Brian P. Benyo, president of the manufacturers coalition, and Thomas M. Humphries, CEO of the Regional Chamber, were sent to school superintendents in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
2014 Honorees Named by Fundraising Professionals
Wednesday, September 17, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Association of Fundraising Professionals Mahoning-Shenango Chapter has announced the 2014 slate of honorees for the Valley’s National Philanthropy Day Awards.
This year’s luncheon ceremony will mark the 24th year of the awards in the Valley and will take place Nov. 14 at Antone’s Banquet Center in Boardman.
The public is invited to purchase tickets for the luncheon; the cost is $30 per person.

At 2 p.m., Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor will join area officeholders and company officials in Lordstown to break ground at the 31.2-acre site where Matalco Inc. will build a $125 million remelt aluminum billet manufacturing plan. The event follows today’s official opening of the long-awaited Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course.
Ohio's Chief Geologist Discusses Drilling Prospects
Wednesday, September 17, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The state's chief geologist says that the future of oil and gas exploration across Ohio might rest with improved technology and other shale plays that appear to have the same sort of rich organic content as the Utica/Point Pleasant shale, today a focal point of the industry.
"We're investigating the Rhinestreet shale and the Huron shale," said Tom Serenko, Ohio state geologist, Tuesday. "If you look at the cores, you see the similarities to the Point Pleasant. We're dealing with very dark, organic-rich shale."
UPMC, Jameson Health Anticipate 2015 Merger
Wednesday, September 17, 2014NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Early 2015 is the anticipated timeframe for completing Jameson Health System’s merger with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, says Steve Warner, chairman of Jthe ameson board of directors.
The letter of intent announced Tuesday (READ STORY) begins the due diligence process, which is expected to take 60 to 90 days, leading to a definitive agreement both Jameson’s and UPMC’s boards would have to approve, he said.

One of 3 Ohio New Businesses Started Online
Wednesday, September 17, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A total of 7,545 new entities filed to do business in Ohio in August. This is an increase compared to August 2013, in which 7,094 new entities filed with the Secretary of State.
To date, the office has assisted with 63,721 new business filings (January-August), according to Jon Husted, secretary of state. For the same period last year, there were 62,323 new business filings.
