Regional Chamber Canfield Breakfast Set for Oct. 3
Saturday, September 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Jim Kinnick, planning and engineering administrator for the Ohio Department of Transportation, will discuss plans for a major road project at state Routes 224 and 11 in Canfield at the Regional Chamber’s Good Morning, Canfield breakfast Oct. 3 at Tippecanoe Country Club.
Preliminary work will begin this fall on the project, which is expected to be completed in October 2015.
Ohio Unemployment Rate Holds at 5.7% in August
Friday, September 19, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.7% in August, unchanged from the July rate, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported this morning. Last month’s rate was down from 7.5% a year earlier.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio last month was 234,000, up 1,000 from the month before. The number of unemployed has decreased by 109,000 over the past year, from 433,000.
Ohio Adds More Online Business Services
Friday, September 19, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Beginning today, companies in Ohio will be able to register trade and fictitious names and update statutory agents online. The expanded services build upon the existing offerings of Ohio Business Central, which was established in October 2013.
Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced the expanded online services during a speech Thursday to the National Association of Women Business Owners of Columbus.

ODNR Lifts Ban on Weathersfield Well No. 1
Friday, September 19, 2014NILES, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources has lifted its suspension on one of the two American Water Management Services injection wells in Weathersfield Township, the agency announced Thursday.
In a prepared statement, ODNR spokeswoman Bethany McCorkle said that after analyzing data in the wake of a 2.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred in late August, the agency determined that the shallower well – AWMS #1 -- was not related to any seismic activity.
Ewing Presses Case for Manufacturing Network
Friday, September 19, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Communities with a strong background in traditional manufacturing need support to adopt new technologies, the Youngstown Business Incubator’s chief operating officer told a Department of Commerce panel Thursday in Washington.
Barb Ewing urged support for the proposed National Network for Manufacturing Innovation, which she said is “crucial” for such communities. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker hosted the panel discussion.
Savage to Lead Electrical Contractors Association
Friday, September 19, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- Jack Savage has been named assistant executive director of the Mahoning Valley chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association. He will succeed Thomas Travers as executive director upon Travers' retirement at the end of this year.
Savage, an attorney, was with Manchester, Bennett, Powers & Ullman LPA (now Manchester Newman & Bennett) in Youngstown and also owned and operated Tag Media, a corporate video production agency. He earned his baccalaureate at Youngstown State University and a juris doctorate at the University of Akron School of Law.
YSU Celebrates Issuance of Its First US Patent
Friday, September 19, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The first U.S. patent awarded to Youngstown State University should draw additional funding for future research projects, secure more support from the administration, and encourage other researchers and academics to pursue new and exciting ideas that can also be patented.
"I hope that this will actually inspire my colleagues who are involved in research to aim for that kind of target -- to get a patent," said Tom Oder, an assistant professor of physics whose decade of work has resulted the first patent in the history of the university.
