McNally Names Woodberry to Lead Development Office
Friday, December 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- T. Sharon Woodberry, the city’s economic development director, will head the newly created department of community planning and economic development, Mayor John McNally announced this morning.
Woodberry has worked 14 years in the city’s economic development office at various levels. “I’ve been impressed with her work so far,” the mayor said. “I believe she’s earned the opportunity to serve in this position.”
'Rear-Seat Kickers' Top Passengers' In-Flight Gripes

Last year, the first for the survey, "inattentive parents" topped the list of most aggravating airplane passengers. This year, "rear seat kickers" pushed parents down to second place.
Lawrence County United Way Reaches 50% of Goal
Friday, December 12, 2014NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The United Way of Lawrence County reports it has reached half of its $435,000 campaign goal. The United Way chapter raises funds for 19 nonprofit agencies that provide more than 50 programs in the area.
The public affairs division, headed by Janice Dougherty, reported $8,071 for the division, which includes the county courthouse and nonprofit agencies. The professional division, headed by Amy Plyler, Dr. Joe Ross and Jason Medure, reported $6906 which included local attorney’s dentists, physicians and other professionals.

Friday, December 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The contrast between the political ideology of the two men who represent portions of the Mahoning Valley could not be sharper -- and reflect more vividly the wide partisan divide in the U.S. House of Representatives -- than the statements each released last night following the narrow passage of a $1.1 trillion spending package.
The bill, which would fund the federal government through September, now goes to the U.S. Senate, which last night agreed to extend by two days the federal government’s current funding levels in order to provide time for debate.
US Manufacturers See More Savings from Shale Gas
Friday, December 12, 2014NEW YORK -- The continued "shale effect" on U.S. manufacturing could bring an annual cost savings of $22.3 billion by 2030, assuming a high natural gas recovery and low-price scenario, finds a new research report by PwC.
In terms of job creation, continued shale gas activity will create 930,000 shale gas driven manufacturing jobs by 2030 and 1.41 million by 2040, the report adds.
Huntington Finds Consumers Optimistic about Economy
Friday, December 12, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Most consumers living in traditional manufacturing states in the Midwest say they have moved on from the Great Recession and expect next year will be better economically, the third annual Huntington Bank Midwest Economic Index survey finds.
Results of the survey were released Thursday.
This year’s index found a continuation of the trend in which consumers feel positive about the year ahead. Fully half, 50%, expect the economy to be better than this year’s, compared to 49% a year ago and 45% two years ago.

Ryan Blasts Job Losses from China Trade
Friday, December 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A new report released Thursday provides “a lot of ammunition for those of us on Capitol Hill” to argue against unfair trade policies that U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13 Ohio, and others say have cost the United States more than 3.2 million jobs, including 7,800 in Ryan’s district.
The report, issued by the Economic Policy Institute, found those job losses occurred between 2001, when China joined the World Trade Organization, and December 2013. That includes 2.4 million jobs in manufacturing.
