Friday, August 29, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- By applying business principles to Northeast Ohio Medical University, Jay Gershen has seen it double in size since he became its sixth president in January 2010.
“We’re bringing business to campus to commercialize our intellectual property [to fund further research],” the keynote speaker said Thursday at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s annual Salute to Business breakfast. Gershen is president of the medical university.
City Leases Masters Building to Health-Care Startup
Friday, August 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Work should get underway in the next week or two on converting the former Masters Tuxedo building on Market Street into a training center for nurses’ aides, says the operator of the startup school.
Corey Kemp, a registered nurse and Youngstown resident, expects Allied Health Training LLC to be operating in early 2015, he said. Assuming no delays in obtaining necessary permits, work on the building should take six to eight months, he predicted.
Day of Caring Focus on North Side Neighborhood

Tressel to Join Regional Chamber Board
Friday, August 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel is joining the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s board of directors effective Oct. 1, Peter J. Asimakopoulos, chairman, announced Thursday.
Earlier this summer, the Regional Chamber board voted to approve Tressel as a new member. Tressel officially became YSU president July 1 and was installed Aug. 18 during a ceremony at YSU.

Eastern Gateway Gets OK to Offer Degrees Online
Friday, August 29, 2014STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Higher Learning Commission has given the green light to Eastern Gateway Community College to offer online degree programs. The first to be developed are the associate of arts, associate of science and associate of applied science degrees.
The Higher Learning Commission is under the aegis of the North Central Association.
“We are planning to have the associate of arts online degree ready by the spring semester," said James Baber, executive vice president of academic and student affairs, in a prepared statement.
Underwater Mortgages in US Fall to 17%
Friday, August 29, 2014SEATTLE -- One in six U.S. homeowners with a mortgage -- or 8.7 million Americans -- was underwater in the second quarter despite rising residential values, Zillow reported Wednesday.
This is down from 18.8% in the first quarter and from 23.8% in the second quarter of last year.
Underwater refers to a mortgage holder owing more on his loan than he could sell for.
YSU Penguins: Focus, Management, Playoff Push

For the past three seasons, the Youngstown State football team has been one win away from making the playoffs. This year, the feeling is playoffs or bust.

After a 15-year career with stops at Louisville, Penn State and Florida, where he won a national title with Urban Meyer, Carter is back as a coach at the Football Championship Subdivision level. Before spring practice, he joined the football coaching staff at Youngstown State as wide receivers coach and special teams cocoordinator.
