Worker Education Focus of New Learning Alliance
Wednesday, August 25, 2004WARRENDALE, Pa. -- The Regional Learning Alliance at Cranberry Woods opened yesterday, bringing 11 of western Pennsylvania's top education providers under one roof to provide work force training and degree programs, said Mitch Seltzer, general manager of the alliance. The first alliance of its kind in the region and a national model, partner institutions will have 38 classes in session by Sept.
Westminster College Welcomes 420 New Students This Fall
Wednesday, August 25, 2004NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- Breaking an application record for the fifth consecutive year, Westminster College will welcome 420 new students Friday for the start of its 152nd academic year. A total of 1,547 students, the most in Westminster history, applied for admission, said Doug Swartz, dean of admissions.The applications marked a 17% increase over last year's recordof 1,327 applications, Swartz said. The 388 new freshmen and 32 transfer students represent a 14% increase over last year's incoming class, he said.

Wednesday, August 25, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Penguins are flightless birds, but one -- named "Mosaic in Metal" -- apparently has found a way to fly the coop. The five-foot tall fiberglass penguin, one of 31 in the summer Penguin Parade public arts project, is missing.The penguin, decorated with hundreds of one-inch square stainless steel tiles and bolted to a two-foot base, was last seen 5 a.m. July 17 between Moser Hall and Ward Beecher Hall on the Youngstown State University campus. It was discovered missing early that afternoon, university officials said.

MVEDC, Trumbull County Share in $2.7M in Grant Awards"
Tuesday, August 24, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The state of Ohio today awarded more than $2.7 million in development grants to nine private and public entities in Ohio -- including the Mahoning Valley Economic Development Corp. and Trumbull County. The grants, administered by the Ohio Department of Development, are expected to create 849 jobs and retain 1,294 positions.The grants were drawn on two programs, the business development account and the roadwork development account. "These grants help stimulate development and bring good jobs to Ohioans," said Bruce Johnson, state development director.
Ohio Finds Beneficiaries for $49.4 million in Unclaimed Funds
Tuesday, August 24, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Commerce's division of unclaimed funds paid a record $49.4 million in unclaimed funds to current or former Ohioans during fiscal year 2004 -- a 14% increase over the previous fiscal year's payment of $43.4 million, announced Lt.
