Youngstown Foundation Announces Q3 Grants
Tuesday, September 30, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown Foundation announced it will award nearly $400,000 to area organizations including $20,000 to the Butler Institute of American Art here.
The foundation also reported a strong third quarter, with more than $107 million in assets.
The foundation’s distribution committee, which met in September, approving grants from the unrestricted fund as well as the Hine Memorial Fund, the Support Fund, and several donor advised and restricted funds, said Janice E. Strasfeld, executive director.

Mahoning Removes 308 Houses Through Program
Tuesday, September 30, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Mahoning County Land Bank and its 12 community partners took down 308 houses though the Moving Ohio Forward demolition grant program by the program’s deadline today, Mahoning County Treasurer Dan Yemma, land bank chairman, reported.
The number of homes demolished using the grant funds, exceeded the land bank’s initial estimate of 275, he added.
ODNR Meeting to Address Abandoned Mine Projects
Tuesday, September 30, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will hold open houses to discuss proposed abandoned mine land projects throughout Ohio. The meeting for the counties of Mahoning, Columbiana, Jefferson and Stark will take place Oct. 20 in Salem.
Eastern Gateway Gets $2.5M for New Machining Center
Monday, September 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Eastern Gateway Community College plans to establish a new machining and welding training center in the Mahoning Valley, helped along by a $2.5 million direct federal grant and an additional $1 million in federal monies through a statewide consortium, a spokeswoman said today.
"It's going to focus on a shared facility potentially with Youngstown State University and other career centers as they choose to participate," reported Ann Koon, Eastern Gateway’s director of public information.
Tressel to Keynote Good Morning, Boardman Event
Monday, September 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University President Jim Tressel will be the keynote speaker at the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s Good Morning, Boardman breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Oct. 10, at the Boardman Park Lariccia Family Community Center, 375 Boardman-Poland Road.
Additionally, updates on various aspects of the township will be provided by Tom Costello, Boardman township trustee chairman; Tim Saxton, director of operations for Boardman Local Schools; and Dan Slagle, executive director for Boardman Park.
Housing Finance Agency Honors Huntington Bank
Monday, September 29, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Housing Finance Agency has named Huntington Bank its most valuable player for closing $12.1 million in mortgages to low- to moderate-income families between July 1, 2013, and June 30, a fivefold increase over the preceding 12 months, a bank spokesman reported Friday.
The bank is also the recipient of the agency’s “Grand Slam” award for closing the most “Grants for Grads” loans -- home equity loans at no interest -- $4.1 million during the same 12 months.
Political Community Offers Condolences for Traficant

The community continues to await word on arrangements for the former U.S. congressman, which are expected early in the week, according to a Traficant family spokesperson cited in media reports.
BWC Approves New $1B Rebate for Ohio Employers
Monday, September 29, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio employers will receive another $1 billion rebate and workers will benefit from a major new investment in worker safety research and training following action by the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation’ board of directors. “Another Billion Back” includes the $1 billion rebate to 3,800 local governments and approximately 184,000 private sector employers, as well as several new programs targeting workplace safety.
Economists Foresee 3% Growth, Volatility in 2015
Monday, September 29, 2014WASHINGTON -- Unemployment will fall to 5.7% next year and inflation will rise a tad as the economy rebounds to 3.0% growth in an environment of greater volatility.
That’s the consensus of 46 macro-economists who responded to a survey conducted between Aug. 25 and Sept. 9 for the National Association for Business Economics, the results of which were released today.
