CHS Finalizes Purchase of Sharon Health System
Wednesday, April 02, 2014SHARON, Pa. -- Community Health Systems Inc. completed its purchase of substantially all of the assets of Sharon Regional Health System, the companies jointly announced late Tuesday.
Sharon Regional Health System, which operates a 251-bed hospital and 23 satellite centers in Mercer and counties, announced plans last August to affiliate with CHS, which operates ValleyCare Health System Inc. of Ohio. The sale follows approval by regulatory agencies.
Ruddy Insurance Adds Downtown Youngstown Office
Wednesday, April 02, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A local insurance agent is looking to capitalize on the revival he sees downtown by opening an office in the Peggy Ann Building.
Ruddy Insurance Group opened an office this week on the second floor of the building, 101 W. Federal St. The insurance agency, which also has offices in Niles and Boardman, joins Friends Roastery, which occupies the ground floor of the building, and Massage Café which opened in the building’s lower level a month ago.

CoreLogic Index Shows Gain in Area Home Prices
Wednesday, April 02, 2014IRVINE, Calif. -- Home prices in the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan area, including distressed sales, increased 6.0% in February compared to a year earlier, the CoreLogic home price index reported Tuesday. Excluding distressed sales, year-over-year prices rose 3%.
On a month-over-month basis, home prices, including distressed properties, increased by 0.7% in February from January. Excluding distressed sales, home prices in the market increased by 0.4% over the month.
Bevack Reflects on 5 Turbulent Years at UCFC
Tuesday, April 01, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- When Patrick W. Bevack took charge of United Community Financial Corp. Jan. 1, 2011, its future was bleak and there was no assurance it would survive or, if it did, remain independent. Bevack retired Monday.
When he became UCFC's CEO, it was under the control of federal and state regulators who watched its every move. Neither UCFC nor its subsidiary, the Home Savings and Loan Co., could make a major decision without first clearing it with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. or the Ohio Division of Financial Institutions.
Abraham, Interviewing at NIU, to Apply for YSU Post
Tuesday, April 01, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Martin Abraham, dean of Youngstown State University’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, will interview Wednesday and Thursday for a post at Northern Illinois University, but also is expressing interest in the open presidency at YSU.
Hired as the founding dean of the STEM College, Abraham has been at YSU for seven years. The NIU job, executive vice president and provost, would represent an opportunity for career advancement, he said. NIU is a larger school than YSU, with about 21,000 students,

Columbiana County Surpasses 100 Well Permits
Tuesday, April 01, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- More than 100 horizontal well permits have been issued in Columbiana County since oil and gas exploration took hold in the Utica shale in 2010, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
Chesapeake Exploration LLC was awarded a third permit to drill at the Huffman Trust property in Butler Township March 28, thereby receiving the 101st permit to be issued in the county, according to agency data.
