Settlement Ends Ethics Probe of WRPA Director
Friday, April 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Ethics Commission has closed its review of allegations that Scott Lewis, a member of the Western Reserve Port Authority’s board of directors, acted improperly with regard to the Davis cargo building at Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport
The end of the review follows a settlement agreement reached earlier this month between Lewis and the commission, James Floyd, port authority chairman, said in a news release issued Friday. Terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
Covelli Centre Posts Most Profitable Quarter Ever
Friday, April 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The city's Covelli Centre reported its most profitable quarter to date, earning nearly $400,000 for the three-month period ended March 31, according to financial statements released by the city this morning.
The Covelli Centre reported total net income for the quarter at $382,016, nearly $4,000 above its projected income of $378,410.
"It was our best quarter ever," says Eric Ryan, executive director of the Covelli Centre and president of J.A.C. Management Group LLC. "We're trending to have a tremendous year."
Farmers Sees Better Year Ahead, Shareholders Told
Friday, April 25, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- Farmers National Banc Corp. took the tough steps needed in 2013 to have a year of greater growth in 2014, its chief executive officer, Kevin J. Helmick, and chief financial officer, Carl D. Culp, told shareholders Thursday.
Among the news made yesterday was Helmick’s announcement that Farmers Bank will open an office in Alliance in December. The 2,000-square-foot space will be a full-service branch across the street from the University of Mount Union.
United Community Financial Earns $2.1M in First Quarter
Friday, April 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- United Community Financial Corp., holding company of The Home Savings and Loan Co., reports consolidated net income of $2.1 million for the three months ended March 31.
This compares to net income of $2.2 million for the prior quarter and $2.7 million for the same quarter last year.

Consumers Buying New Vehicles at Record Pace
Friday, April 25, 2014WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Retail sales of new light vehicles are projected to reach their highest level for the month of April since 2005, says a survey conducted for J.D. Power and LMC Automotive. Sales are expected to come in at 1.1 million units, up 5% from last April, they said Thursday.
The seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate is projected to be 13.3 million units, more than 700,000 higher than a year ago.
Consumers are expected to spend $33.5 billion on new vehicles this month, which would be a record for April. The previous high was $30.5 billion in 2005.
Tressel on YSU's Short List of Candidates for President
Thursday, April 24, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown State University Presidential Search Advisory Committee has narrowed the applicant pool for the YSU presidency to the following six candidates, YSU announced shortly after noon today.
Among the six candidates is Jim Tressel, YSU's former football coach and the executive vice president for student success at the University of Akron, who also is one of three finalists to become UA's next president.
