Franklin Cites Image for Creating Warren's Vitality
Thursday, May 01, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- In his third annual State of the City Address, Mayor Doug Franklin cited “the image we present of our city” as the top factor in creating economic viability, and touted recent economic development achievements such as Laird Technologies’ decision to bring 200 jobs to the city.
Franklin delivered the speech Wednesday afternoon in City Council Chambers at the municipal building. During the speech, he also addressed the city’s heritage, reviewed city operations and “creating our future” through redefining its neighborhoods and addressing quality of life issues.
Cortland Bancorp Earns $1.33M in First Quarter
Thursday, May 01, 2014CORTLAND, Ohio -- Cortland Bancorp, holding company for Cortland Savings and Banking Co., today reported earnings increased 61% to $1.33 million, or 29 cents per share, compared to $830,000, or 18 cents per share, for the first quarter of 2013.
Earnings results for the quarter were highlighted by an expanded net interest margin, continuation of “stellar asset quality trends and improvement in the efficiency ratio,” the company said.
"We are off to a great start this year delivering our most profitable quarter in over 10 years," said James M. Gasior, president and CEO.

YSU Scientists Support Citizens Rights Fracking Ban
Thursday, May 01, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Twenty scientists from Youngstown State University have signed on to support a charter amendment that would ban hydraulic fracturing and wastewater injection wells in the city.
Faculty members representing the geology, physics, chemistry and biology departments at YSU say that oil and gas exploration brings with it many unanswered questions about the levels of toxicity produced during the process, and until those questions are answered, all drilling should be placed on hold.

The weather offered “a good metaphor for the conditions last year we were in,” Paul Hagman said, when volunteers worked on the first batch of maple syrup to be tapped from the Charles S. Robinson grove of maple trees at Mill Creek MetroParks.

Warren Toastmasters Club to Hold Open House
