Unions Call for United Nations Sanctions Against Nike
Wednesday, April 14, 2004PITTSBURGH -- Four unions representing over three million workers in the United States and Canada have called on the United Nations to review Nike's affiliation with the UN Global Compact because, the unions contend, Nike systematically violates workers' rights.The four labor unions include United Steelworkers of America, Canadian Labour Congress, Glass, Molders, Pottery, Plastics & Allied Workers International Union and Industrial,Wood and Allied Workers of Canada. The UN Global Compact is an initiative that corporations seeking to cast themselves as socially responsible affiliate to.
Ohio Department Settles Sanction with Department of Labor
Wednesday, April 14, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services has reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor to settle a Workforce Investment Act sanction levied against the state last year. Under the settlement agreement, the state will receive $933,086, an amount equal to the sanction levied for WIA Program Year 2001."Federal officials have provided us with technical assistance and they have tested our new job matching and reporting system," says ODJFS Director Tom Hayes.

Pennsylvania Lowers Interest Rates for Business Loans

There is more than $38 million available for new loans under SBF."This is the latest round of good news for current and prospective business owners in Pennsylvania," Yablonsky says.

U.S. Multinationals Report Further Improvement
Wednesday, April 14, 2004NEW YORK -- Senior U.S. executives report a brighter business climate in the first quarter of 2004, but see only incremental gains in jobs and major new investments over the next 12 months, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers' Management Barometer. Companies forecasting the strongest revenue growth plan higher levels of new jobs and capital investments, suggesting that more new jobs and greater investments would result from higher growth.Nearly half the surveyed companies, 46%, down from 49% in the last quarter of 2003, expect to increase their work force over the next 12 months.

Union Challenges 'Bad Faith' Bargaining at RMI

Inc., Niles, Ohio, for failing to provide union negotiators with certain financial records necessary for bargaining.RMI broke the law when it refused to provide documentation for the company's repeated claims that the Niles plant is losing money, the union says.More than 360 RMI employees have been locked out since the company and union failed to reach an agreement when their previous contract expired on Oct.
