GM Reports April Sales of 401,451 Units"
Tuesday, May 04, 2004DETROIT -- General Motors dealers sold 401,451 new cars and trucks in April, up slightly (0.2%) compared to April 2003. GM's truck sales (248,555) were up 1.5% and car sales (152,896) were down 2%.Sales of the Chevrolet Cavalier of 17,217 units for the month marked a drop of 6.5% over April 2003, and year-to-date sales of 67,278 units is down 4.7% over the same period laast year. Conversely, the Pontiac Sunfire sold 3,489 units for the month, up 10.4% over the year-ago total. Year-to-date sales are up as well, with 12,666 units sold through April, an 11.1% gain.
Ohio to Move Forward With Electronic Voting
Tuesday, May 04, 2004MCKINNEY, Texas -- The Controlling Board of Ohio yesterday approved a request from the Ohio Secretary of State to provide federal funds from the Help America Vote Actto 31 selected counties in Ohio, enabling voters to experience the benefits of touch-screen voting this November. The counties include Trumbull and Columbiana.Diebold Election Systems has been selected by 20 of those counties, including Trumbull and Columbiana, to serve more than 1.4 million voters.
Housing Affordability Rises in First Quarter

Summer Job Forecast Bleak for Nation's Teens
Tuesday, May 04, 2004BOSTON -- The summer of 2004 promises to be bleak for millions of this nation's teenagers, many of who have already begun pounding the pavement in search of work -- mostly to no avail given the weakness in the jobs market for this age bracket.Based on an analysis of teen employment rates during the first three months of this year and projections from summer teen employment models developed by Northeastern University economist Andrew Sum, this summer will be another difficult one, about on par with last in terms of work opportunities and employment rates.
Clear Channel Reports Net Income of $47 Million
Tuesday, May 04, 2004SAN ANTONIO -- Clear Channel Communications Inc. today reported record results for its quarter ended March 31. Revenues reached $2 billion, up 11% over the first quarter of 2003. Net income and diluted earnings per share grew 64% and 58%, respectively, to $116.5 million and 19 cents per diluted share compared to the year-ago quarter.The 2004 net income includes $47 million and $11.6 million of pre-tax gains related to the sale of the company's remaining investment in Univision Communications and the sale of radio operating assets, respectively.

Tuesday, May 04, 2004SAN FRANCISCO -- Getting to the heart of the heated political debate on offshoring, results of a national survey indicate a surprising willingness among U.S. technology executives to pay higher taxes to compensate for jobs they send offshore.Just over 40% of the executive-level Information Technology "decision makers" who participated in a survey by CNET News.com and Harris Interactive agree with the proposition that companies should be required to pay a "per-head" levy for every position sent to another country, while 39% oppose it.
Consumer Groups Petition FCC to Block AT&T Wireless, Cingular Merger"
Tuesday, May 04, 2004WASHINGTON -- The Consumers Union and Consumer Federation of America has filed a petition to block the merger of AT&T Wireless and Cingular, citing anticipated higher prices and diminished quality of service in the wireless market from consolidating the nation's second and third largest cell phone companies."This merger proposes an unacceptable level of concentration at the national level, clearly in violation of the merger guidelines," states the petition filed Monday with the Federal Communications Commission, which will determine the merger outcome.
