Ohio to Move Forward With Electronic Voting
MCKINNEY, Texas -- The Controlling Board of Ohio yesterday approved a request from the Ohio Secretary of State to provide federal funds from the Help America Vote Actto 31 selected counties in Ohio, enabling voters to experience the benefits of touch-screen voting this November. The counties include Trumbull and Columbiana.Diebold Election Systems has been selected by 20 of those counties, including Trumbull and Columbiana, to serve more than 1.4 million voters. Potential revenue could be in the range of $10 to $20 million in 2004, depending upon the number of counties that move forward.Last month, The National Federation of the Blind charged the Controlling Board and Ohio Secretary of State with failure to provide voting machines and voting systems that are accessible to blind voters, naming in the lawsuit 31 Buckeye State counties including Trumbull and Columbiana (read story). "We have been working closely with counties to plan for the deployment of electronic voting for the November 2004 general election," says Mark G. Radke, director of marketing for Diebold Election Systems.Radke noted that more than 55,600 Diebold Election Systems voting units were deployed throughout Georgia, Maryland and California during the March Super Tuesday Primary Election with no reported security issues.
