More Than Half of Consumers Affected by Higher Gas Prices
Wednesday, May 19, 2004WASHINGTON -- Just as the retail landscape started to stabilize, rising prices at the pump are shifting consumers' spending habits once again. Although 43.2% of consumers do not believe gas prices will have a major impact on their spending, others are choosing to scale back on vacation plans, new clothes, and even groceries, according to a new National Retail Federation survey. Many retail sectors, from cars to clothes, will feel a pinch. According to the survey, nearly one in three consumers (31.6%) plan to trim or halt travel and vacation plans due to rising gas prices.
Alcan to Create Rolled Products Company
Wednesday, May 19, 2004MONTREAL -- Alcan Inc. plans to pursue a spin-off to its shareholders of substantially all of the rolled products businesses held by Alcan prior to its acquisition of Pechiney. The proposed distribution will create the world's largest aluminum rolled products company with revenues of more than $6 billion, according to Travis Engen, president and chief executive officer.

Steel Company Gets $1 million to Build Facility in Youngstown
Tuesday, May 18, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The state has released a $1 million loan to assist the construction of a new facility for a steel service center in Youngstown, officials reported late yesterday.Genmak Steel LLC intends to construct a 74,000 square-foot building on 10 acres at the Ohio Works Industrial Park. The facility will be a steel service center specializing in the manufacturing of carbon-steel sheet and sheared-to-size blanks. Steel blanks are a section of sheet metal that has the same outer dimensions -- such as a car door or hood -- but are not stamped. State Rep.
Operating Revenues Total $13.8 Million at Avalon Holdings
Tuesday, May 18, 2004HOWLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- First-quarter net operating revenues at Avalon Holdings Corp. increased to $13.8 million compared with $11.6 million in the prior year's first quarter, reports Tim Coxson, chief financial officer. Avalon incurred a loss from continuing operations of $700,000, or 18 cents per share, compared with a loss from continuing operations of $1 million, or 27 cents per share, for the first quarter of 2003.Avalon Holdings Corp.
Kmart Nets $93 Million for First Quarter
Tuesday, May 18, 2004TROY, Mich. -- Kmart Holding Corp. reports net income of $93 million, or 94 cents per diluted share, for the first quarter of fiscal 2004. Kmart Corp., the predecessor company, reported a net loss of $862 million for the same quarter in fiscal 2003.Operating income for the 13 weeks ended April 28 was $165 million, or 3.6% of sales, as compared to a loss of $39 million, or negative 0.6% of sales, for the same period in 2003.

Tuesday, May 18, 2004NEW YORK -- Traffic to the John Kerry for President Web site attracted 1.6 million unique Americans during the month of April, while the Bush Cheney '04 Web site drew 1.5 million visitors, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. Kerry's Web site continued its three-month lead over the Bush site from one million unique Americans in February. During this period, Kerry conducted more online advertising than Bush.During April, Kerry's online advertising campaign registered 52 million online advertising impressions.
Hubbard Couple Establishes YSU Dietetics Scholarship
