NwPACC Executive Director Is Seminar Presenter
Wednesday, June 02, 2004GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Health care routinely is the first item on the agenda for labor contract talks and the last to be solved. Sometimes it doesn't get settled -- a primary cause of labor strikes. In 1998, three years after operating a health care purchasing cooperative, employers and union members of the Northwest Pennsylvania Cooperation Council pioneered a Taft-Hartley benefit trust, providing health care to 7,000 lives. The plan is one of a few multi-employer, multi-unionTrusts offering health care benefits in the United States, according to Dick Miller, executive director of NwPACC.
Disaster Assistance Available to Six Additional Ohio Counties

Bob Taft. "The severe storms have disrupted the lives of many Ohioans," Taft said.
More Homeowners Take Equity Lines of Credit
Wednesday, June 02, 2004WASHINGTON -- About 7.2 million homeowners took out home equity lines of credit last year, up 12% from 2001 when 6.4 million such credit lines were established, according to tabulations released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.The source of this information, the American Housing Survey, sponsored by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, entered its fourth decade with the publication of 2003 results on the Internet today.
May Sales Up 6.5% at General Motors
Wednesday, June 02, 2004DETROIT -- General Motors dealers sold 446,787 new cars and trucks in May, up 6.5% compared to May 2003. This was GM's best sales performance for the calendar year-to-date. GM's truck sales (276,746) were up 11% and car sales (170,041) were flat compared to year-ago levels (-0.4%)."We had our strongest sales results so far this year, with trucks leading the charge," said John Smith, group vice president, GM North America Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing.
Strickland Asks U.S. to Declare Columbiana County Disaster Area
Tuesday, June 01, 2004WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland, D-6th Ohio, today asked President Bush to declare Columbiana and Athens counties federal disaster areas. Recent storms have damaged homes and businesses in both counties, caused an estimated $5.5 million in damage in Columbiana County alone, he wrote Bush. "Families and businesses across Ohio and in my district have been devastated by these storms," Strickland wrote.
Longtime Niles Funeral Home Gets New Owner
Tuesday, June 01, 2004NILES, Ohio -- Niles native James R. Williams Jr. recently purchased the oldest funeral home in Niles, Holloway & Sons. Founded in 1875, the funeral home now will be called Holloway-Williams Funeral Home Inc.Until the purchase, four generations of the Holloway family managed and owned the funeral home. Leonard Holloway Jr. will remain as a funeral home consultant.Williams (second from left in photo) is a graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and has been a funeral director for the past 12 years. He has also performed undergraduate work at Miami University of Ohio.

Ohio Governor Seeks Federal Aid for Eight Counties

YSU Scores 99.9% on Board of Regents Audit
Tuesday, June 01, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio --Youngstown State University's recent audit by the Ohio Board of Regents was close to perfect, scoring 99.9%, reports Beck Geltz, director of institutional research at YSU. Her office oversaw the reporting requirements.Of the 6,352 pieces of data reported by YSU in the enrollment and financial aid audit, OBOR detected only seven errors.
