Kent State Trustees OK 2% Tuition Hike
Friday, May 30, 2014KENT, Ohio -- The Kent State University Board of Trustees has raised tuition by 2% for undergraduate and graduate students at its eight campuses.
Effective this fall semester, undergraduate tuition for students at the main campus will rise $98 per semester, to $5,006 from $4,908. Graduate tuition will increase by $104 to $5,326 from $5,222. More than half of the new revenues from the hike will be allocated to increases for student scholarships, trustees said.
McNally's Attorney, Yavorcik Speak Briefly to Press
Thursday, May 29, 2014CLEVELAND -- After six minutes standing beside their lawyers as they entered not-guilty pleas inside the Cuyahoga County courtroom of Judge Pamela A. Barker (READ STORY), and another 40 minutes being booked into the county jail, Youngstown Mayor John A. McNally, Mahoning County Auditor Michael Sciortino and attorney Martin Yavorcik had little to say.
“Not guilty,” said Yavorcik.
“No comment,” said McNally.
McNally, Sciortino, Yavorcik Plead Not Guilty to Charges
Thursday, May 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The mayor of this city, attorney John McNally, uttered just four words, “Thank you, your honor,” this morning in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court as he stood with his attorney, Lynn Maro, as she entered a plea of not guilty on multiple public corruption and bribery charges.
McNally and his co-defendants, Mahoning County Auditor Michael Sciortino and attorney Martin Yavorcik, were arraigned this morning by Judge Pamela A. Barker. Like the mayor, Sciortino and Martin Yavorcik pleaded not guilty.

Yo-Pitt Manufacturing Partnership Passed Over
Thursday, May 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The architects of a regional application for one of 12 manufacturing partnership designations from the federal government say they will assess the proposal’s shortcomings before deciding how to proceed with any future effort.
The application by a partnership representing 19 counties from northeastern Ohio, western Pennsylvania and West Virginia is not among the 12 proposals awarded Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership designations. More than 70 applicants submitted proposals for the designations, which the Obama Administration announced Wednesday.
‘Pray for the City’ Seeks Blessings for All
Thursday, May 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Every Tuesday since early April, Jason Cashell has been praying for Youngstown. And he's not alone.
Cashell, pastor of Cross Point Bible Fellowship in Vienna Township, is one of the regulars at “Pray for the City,” held every Tuesday noon in Trinity United Methodist Church in the downtown. He welcomes everyone who shows up to pray about everything that affects the city, from schools and crime to police and officeholders.
Through their prayers, they hope to improve Youngstown.

Thursday, May 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- With the help of speakers in five cities across Ohio, Gov. John Kasich rolled out the new OhioMeansJobs.com Wednesday morning during a video conference viewed locally at Youngstown State University.
The website follows the rebranding to OhioMeansJobs of the state's One-Stop workforce development system, but with new features aimed at giving employers and job seekers more options. Several elements of the site have been added or revamped.

Mahoning Valley Historical Society to Present Awards

Winners of the awards, presented to honor those in Mahoning and Trumbull counties who take an active role in preserving historic buildings, sites and districts, will be recognized at the Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s 139th annual meeting. Holocaust Play Written Here to Open in London
Thursday, May 29, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- J&B Production Arts Services, the company that controls the performance rights to A Light in the Darkness: A Story of Hope During the Holocaust, recently announced that play written here will have its first production overseas. Written J.E. Ballantyne Jr., the drama will be presented by the American School in London this fall, the playwright said.
