Lockheed Martin: Sequestration May Cause Consolidations

Tim Ryan, D-13, and other public officials reacted Friday to published reports that defense contractor Lockheed Martin Corp. is considering closing its Akron facility, where more than 500 are employed, as well as its facilities in central New York.

GM's October Sales Up 16%, Cruze Sales Down 15.9%
Friday, November 01, 2013DETROIT -- General Motors Co. says its dealers delivered 226,402 vehicles in the United States in October, up 16% versus a year ago. Retail sales were also up 16% and fleet sales were up 14%.
But sales of the Lordstown, Ohio-built Chevrolet Cruze actually fell in October, down 15.9% compared to October 2012. In September, Cruze sales were down 50% compared to the same month last year. Year-to-date, Cruze sales remain up 6.1% with 211,862 of the vehicles moving off dealers’ lots.
ValleyCare Makes Further Cutbacks at Northside
Friday, November 01, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- ValleyCare Health System of Ohio will eliminate 56.4 full-time equivalent positions at its Northside Medical Center under a restructuring plan announced to employees this week. Northside will combine “a small number of related care units for efficiency,” according to a statement issued in response to media inquiries.
Halcon Receives Third Well Permit in Mahoning County
Friday, November 01, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Halcon Operating Co. Inc. intends to drill a third well in Jackson Township in Mahoning County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
ODNR issued Halcon on Oct. 24 a permit to drill a second horizontal well on the Grenamyer property that is intended for oil and gas exploration in the Utica shale, records show.
Earlier this year, Halcon drilled its first well in Mahoning County on the Davidson property, also in Jackson Township.

Apprenticeships Presented as College Alternative
Friday, November 01, 2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The work is hard, physically demanding, but rewarding financially and emotionally, apprenticeship coordinators for the building trades unions told juniors and seniors at Austintown Fitch High School Thursday.
The work requires intelligence as well, the coordinators emphasized. Those with a 0.8 GPA need not apply, Matthew J. Sargent, the co-coordinator for Local 207 of the Ironworkers union, said, or if a student has been excessively absent.
“You have to be prepared to come into our program,” Sargent said.
Cortland Bancorp Reports 3Q Net Income of $617,000
Friday, November 01, 2013CORTLAND, Ohio -- Cortland Bancorp, holding company of Cortland Banks, reports third-quarter net income of $617,000, or 14 cents per share, and net income for the first nine months of $2.25 million, or 50 cents a share.
Third-quarter net income compares to $799,000, or 18 cents per share, for the second quarter, and $1.27 million, or 28 cents per share the third quarter of 2012.
Net income for the first nine months of 2012 was $3.38 million, or 75 cents per share.
