Halcon Receives Third Well Permit in Mahoning County
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Halcon Operating Co. Inc. intends to drill a third well in Jackson Township in Mahoning County, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
ODNR issued Halcon on Oct. 24 a permit to drill a second horizontal well on the Grenamyer property that is intended for oil and gas exploration in the Utica shale, records show.
Earlier this year, Halcon drilled its first well in Mahoning County on the Davidson property, also in Jackson Township.
Since 2011, ODNR has issued 29 permits for horizontal wells in Mahoning County. Of those permits, eight are now drilled, according to ODNR's web site.
The majority of those permits are issued to Hilcorp Energy Co., which has 12 permits at its Carbon Limestone Landfill site in Poland Township. Two of those wells are now drilled, and a third well is being drilled, according to ODNR.
Two new horizontal wells targeting the Utica were also permitted for Columbiana County, according to ODNR.
The state issued the permits to Chesapeake Energy for two wells on the Leona property in Franklin Township, according to ODNR.
There were no new permits issued for Trumbull County last week.
ODNR awarded 14 new permits for oil and gas exploration in the Utica during the week ending Oct. 26.
Chesapeake received seven permits: two in Columbiana County, two more in Carroll County, and three in Harrison County, records show.
Antero Resources Corp., which has drilled strong wells in the southern tier of the Utica, was awarded three permits for exploration in Noble County. Gulfport Energy, which has also reported robust wells in this section of the Utica, received two new permits to drill in Belmont County.
Halcon and EQT Production Co. were awarded one permit each – Halcon for its Mahoning County well and EQT for a well in Guernsey County.
As of Oct. 26, there were 34 horizontal rigs operating in the Utica shale. Since 2011, 953 permits have been issued, 597 wells are drilled, and 169 of those wells are producing, according to ODNR.
No new horizontal wells permitted for the counties of Lawrence and Mercer in western Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
