Unauthorized Plane Prompts Tense Moments at Air Base
Thursday, July 29, 2004VIENNA, Ohio -- A training exercise for security forces turned into the real thing shortly before noon today at the Youngstown Air Reserve Station when an unauthorized civilian plane suddenly appeared on base property and taxied to a military hangar."We were in the middle of a training session -- normal practice -- for security and fire personnel -- when this happened," said the base spokesman, Staff Sgt. Shawn David McCowan.
Vacation Express Reorganizes Flight Schedule to Florida
Thursday, July 29, 2004VIENNA, Ohio -- Facing declining ticket sales for midweek flights to Florida from the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, Vacation Express today said it will merge flight service with another airport experiencing the same situation.For the past few weeks, the three mid-week flights from Youngstown to Orlando, Fla., have originated from the Wilkes Barre/Scranton International Airport in Pennsylvania, reported Steve Bowser, interim director at Youngstown-Warren.

Retailers Say Banks Mislead Consumers on Debit Card Fees

Ohio Woodlands Could be Included in Federal Program
Wednesday, July 28, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Working woodlands in Trumbull, Columbiana and 29 other counties in Ohio soon may be eligible for special protection under a proposal to enter the U.S. Forest Service's Forest Legacy Program, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The Forest Legacy Program assists states in acquiring permanent conservation easements from willing sellers for woods that meet specific purposes and criteria.The goal of the program is to protect forests from conversion to non-forest uses.
FirstEnergy Earns $204 Million in Second Quarter
Wednesday, July 28, 2004AKRON, Ohio -- FirstEnergy Corp. today reported that second quarter earnings of $204 million, or 62 cents per share of common stock. Earnings were $221.6 million, or 67 cents per share, excluding charges related to the settlement of securities and derivative lawsuits (read story) and the sale of the company's interest in Great Lakes Energy Partners LLC.These figures compare with second-quarater 2003 earnings of $152.9 million, or 52 cents per share, before a loss on discontinued operations and unusual charges.

Metalforming Association Applauds Increase in Steel Imports
Wednesday, July 28, 2004WASHINGTON -- The Precision Metalforming Association welcomed the increase in steel imports in June as reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce, stating that "steel consumers in the U.S. desperately need access to competitively priced steel."The department released preliminary steel import data for June that showed total steel imports at 2.9 million tons, an increase of 9% over May 2004. Year-to-date import levels through June are 14 million tons, an increase of 30% from 2003 levels."PMA is encouraged by the rise in steel imports," says President William E. Gaskin.
