Call Off Sick Lest It ‘Ruin a Good Mood'
Friday, October 24, 2014CHICAGO -- From claiming they need the day to fix some botched plastic surgery to saying they accidentally got on a plane, workers in the United States have either had some sitcom-worthy misadventures this year, or they've simply gotten more creative with their sick-day excuses, CareerBuilder reports.
On the plus side, over the past year, 28% of employees have called in to work sick when they were feeling well, down from 32% last year, finds a new survey.
CityScape, Wick Neighbors Merge Organizations
Thursday, October 23, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Following 200 hours of discussion spanning 11 months, Youngstown CityScape and Wick Neighbors, Inc. are merging, expanding the area and type of projects that will be undertaken in the downtown and Wick Park neighborhoods.
While CityScape has typically focused on beautification projects downtown, most notably the annual StreetScape event, Wick Neighbors has worked on infrastructure and revitalization efforts in Wick Park and Smoky Hollow.
GM Reports $1.4 Billion Profit in Third Quarter
Thursday, October 23, 2014DETROIT -- General Motors Co. today it posted a third-quarter profit of $1.4 billion, or 81 cents per share, up from $700 million, or 45 cents a share, during the same period last year.
The gains were largely because of improved auto markets in North America and China, said GM CEO Mary Barra. "Strong global sales and growing margins in North America and China helped GM deliver very solid third quarter results," she said. "Despite industry challenges in Russia and South America, our earnings were on plan as we continue to execute our customer-focused strategy."
United Van Lines Names Carney-McNicholas No. 1

Based on 10 metrics taken from customer response surveys, the award – and a cash prize -- is given to the highest-rated company. Often, mere fractions of a point separate the winners of first and second places.
UCFC Reports Net Income of $2.9 Million for 3rd Quarter
Thursday, October 23, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- United Community Financial Corp., holding company of Home Savings and Loans Co., Wednesday reported net income for the quarter ended Sept. 30 of $2.9 million, or six cents a share. This compares to $42.4 million, or 84 cents per share, for the second quarter and $1.72 million, or three cents a share, for the third quarter of 2013.
UCFC also reported its board of directors declared a cash dividend of a penny per share payable Nov. 14 to shareholders of record at the close of business Nov. 3.
Farmers Banc Corp. Reports Net Income of $2.28M
Thursday, October 23, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- Farmers National Banc Corp., holding company of Farmers National Bank and Farmers Trust Co., Wednesday reported third-quarter net income of $2.28 million, or 12 cents a share.
This compares to second-quarter net income of $2.35 million, or 13 cents a share, and third-quarter 2013 net income of $1.61 million, or nine cents a share.
The third-quarter 2013 results “included $1.3 million in severance expenses related to terminated employees,” Farmers said.
F.N.B. Corp.’s 3rd-Quarter Net Income Is $35.4M
Thursday, October 23, 2014PITTSBURGH -- F.N.B. Corp., holding company of First National Bank of Pennsylvania, Wednesday reported $35.39 million in net income for the third quarter, $33.38 million of which is available to common shareholders, or 20 cents per common share.
This compares to $34.83 million net income the second quarter, $32.82 million available to common shareholders, or 20 cents per common share, and $31.63 million net income a year ago, before it issued preferred stock, or 22 cents per share.
Restaurant Job Growth Outpaces Overall Economy
Thursday, October 23, 2014WASHINGTON -- Restaurant industry job growth remains broad-based on the state level, with employment gains outpacing the overall economy in the vast majority of states. Colorado leads the way with a 6.3% increase in jobs through September, while Ohio and Pennsylvania are closer to the bottom of the list with increases of 1.9% and 2.3%, respectively.
YSU Faculty Union Votes to Authorize Strike
Thursday, October 23, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Meeting 45 minutes behind closed doors, more than 160 members of the Youngstown State University chapter of the Ohio Education Association unanimously voted to authorize a strike if an agreement on a new contract cannot be reached with the university.
“We are not confident at all. That's why both parties scheduled fact finding, because we are not confident that we will reach a common position on Oct. 28 [the next scheduled negotiating session],” said Gabriel Palmer-Fernandez, chief negotiator for YSU-OEA.
