YSU Offers New $1,000 Scholarship for Freshmen
Monday, January 20, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University has established a new scholarship that will provide $1,000 to incoming freshmen. The First Opportunity Award, available starting Fall Semester 2014, is for prospective freshmen with a 3.0 high school grade point average and a score of 20 on the ACT or 900 on the SAT exam.
The award is part of the university’s Scholarships for Excellence program that provides scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 annually for nearly 3,000 students based on high school GPA and ACT/SAT scores.
Students to Get Book on US Justice System
Monday, January 20, 2014DAYTON, Ohio -- The Ohio State Bar Foundation has awarded Children’s Historical Publishing Division of Home Based Arts USA a major grant for a second edition of its book for children on the U.S. justice system. It will be distributed statewide to more than 40,000 students, including 1,924 in Youngstown City Schools.
The book is aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
Union Election Vote Next Week at Vallourec Star
Friday, January 17, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- As many as 500 workers at Vallourec Star’s $650 million pipe mill will vote next week on whether to join the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers of America. Voting will take place Jan. 21, 22 and 23.
A news conference is scheduled for Saturday by local representatives of the union. A delegation of Vallourec workers from France is in the Mahoning Valley this weekend to support the organizing campaign, according to a news release from the United Electrical Workers Union.
Vallourec is based in Paris, France.

ODNR Officials Tout New Regs for Oil and Gas
Friday, January 17, 2014NILES, Ohio -- The director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources says existing state regulations governing the oil and gas business, plus new rules being written, help ensure that the industry is properly managed and monitored.
"We never want to say that this is a simple business and accidents won't happen," said Jim Zehringer, ODNR director. "But, hydraulic fracturing has been around in Ohio since the 1950s. It's been done safely -- there's never been a reported case of water contamination because of hydraulic fracturing."
Huntington Nets $158M in 4Q, $639M in 2013
Friday, January 17, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Huntington Bancshares Inc., holding company of Huntington National Bank, Thursday reported net income of $157.8 million for the quarter ended Dec. 31, or 18 cents per diluted common share, and full-year net come of $638.7 million, or 72 cents per diluted share.
This compares to third-quarter 2013 net income of $178.5 million, or 20 cents per diluted share, and fourth-quarter 2012 net income $167.3 million, or 18 cents per share. Full year net income compares to $641.0 million in 2012 or 71 cents per share.
