'Heritage' Turkeys Roam Free at Meadowhawk Farm
Thursday, November 13, 2014CHAMPION TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Ferenc de Szalay hesitates before telling people what his turkeys eat, especially as business picks up right before Thanksgiving.
Not that he has anything to hide, he’s quick to add. All of his turkeys are fed an all-natural feed mix free of any animal byproducts and, when they aren't eating that, they're grazing in the pastures. It's what in the pastures that concerns some people. “After you tell someone it tastes like what [turkeys] eat, [some people] might not be pleased to find out they've been eating grasshoppers,” he says with a laugh.
YSU Recognizes Recipients of $7M in Research Grants
Thursday, November 13, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown State University faculty and staff were awarded more than $7 million in external funding for research projects during fiscal 2013-14, more than double the amount secured a year earlier, officials say.
"It was a good year for external grants, not our best year, but a good year," said Scott Martin, interim associate dean for research at the YSU School of Graduate Studies and Research. "We had about $7.2 million in external grants. In fiscal year 2013, we had $3.5 million."

Business Becomes More Wary of Affordable Care Act

YSU, Canfield Physician to Conduct Drug Trial Study
Thursday, November 13, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A Canfield physician and a Youngstown State University professor will jointly conduct a clinical drug study funded by a global pharmaceutical firm, YSU Interim Provost Martin Abraham announced Wednesday.
At a press event at YSU, Abraham presented Erdal Sarac, M.D., medical director at the Centers for Dialysis Care in Canfield, and Jane Wetzel, Ph.D., assistant professor of physical therapy at YSU.

Affordable Care Act Has Healthy Effect on Hospitals
Wednesday, November 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Hospitals in the region report that the Affordable Care Act is having a healthy effect on the community. Health-care professionals cite the rising number of patients with private insurance or expanded benefits under federal programs such as Medicaid.
“Overall, I think the Affordable Care Act has been positive to the community,” says Matthew Love, senior vice president and chief financial officer at Mercy Health, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners.
Niles Expanded Metals Acquires Oklahoma Plant
Wednesday, November 12, 2014NILES, Ohio -- Niles Expanded Metals & Plastics announced Tuesday it has purchased Oklahoma-based MetalSpand Inc., a move that will position the company for new markets in the central United States and the Gulf Coast region, principals say.
Terms were not disclosed.
"This is a great fit for Niles, as we have always considered an expansion into these territories that are key to the expanded metal market positioning and distribution," said Bill Phillips Jr., president of Niles Expanded Metals.
Regional Airport Awaits Word on Chicago Daily Route
Wednesday, November 12, 2014VIENNA TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Word could come soon on whether scheduled daily air service will return to the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport, its aviation director said Tuesday.
A decision by the U.S. Department of Transportation whether to update Aerodynamics Inc.’s Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity could be “perhaps a week out,” Dan Dickten said. Dickten provided an update to members of the Western Reserve Port Authority’s board of directors at a meeting of its aviation committee Tuesday afternoon.
