Chamber Backs County Sales Tax, State Bond Issue
Wednesday, March 26, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s board of directors is backing both the Mahoning County half-percent sales tax renewal and State Issue 1 on the primary ballot.
The chamber board voted unanimously to support both issues, which will appear on the May ballot. The chamber’s Government Affairs Council, which serves as the its policy and political engagement arm, recommended that the chamber board back both issues.

Wednesday, March 26, 2014WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, questioned Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus Tuesday during a budget hearing conducted by the Appropriations Defense Subcommittee. Ryan, whose 13th congressional district includes parts of Akron, urged Mabus and the Navy to abandon its "anti-competitive contracting measures," which penalizes U.S. domestic tire manufacturers such as Goodyear Tire in Akron.

Brown Meets with CEO of U.S. Steel
Wednesday, March 26, 2014WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown. D-Ohio, met Tuesday with Mario Longhi, president and CEO of U.S. Steel, to discuss efforts to strengthen trade enforcement and protect American steelworkers and businesses.
Among the concerns Longhi raised during a meeting at the senator’s Capitol Hill office was last month’s preliminary ruling by the U.S. Department of Commerce that imposed duties on steel pipe imports from eight countries but failed to punish South Korea, considered to be the worst steel pipe dumping offender.
Region's Unemployment Rates Decline in February
Tuesday, March 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Unemployment rates improved last month in the tri-county area and in its two largest cities, data from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services show.
The February statistics, released by the state this morning, showed Mahoning and Trumbull counties each with an unemployment rate of 7.9%, down from 8.7% in January for Mahoning and down from 8.4% in Trumbull. In February 2013, Mahoning County’s unemployment rate was 9.1% and Trumbull’s 9.2%.
