Chamber Backs County Sales Tax, State Bond Issue
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber’s board of directors is backing both the Mahoning County half-percent sales tax renewal and State Issue 1 on the primary ballot.
The chamber board voted unanimously to support both issues, which will appear on the May ballot. The chamber’s Government Affairs Council, which serves as the its policy and political engagement arm, recommended that the chamber board back both issues.
The half-percent sales tax, which the chamber board supported renewing for a continuing period, provides about $15 million in annual revenues to Mahoning County and represents a significant portion of the county budget, the chamber noted in announcing its support.
Issue 1, the statewide public works bond issue, would authorize $1.875 billion in bonds over 10 years for local road, bridge, sewer, water and other infrastructure projects. The program was first approved in 1987 and renewed in 1995 and 2006. Last year about $8 million in Issue 1 money was approved for Mahoning and Trumbull counties.
