A Stronger Home Savings Marks 125th Anniversary
Thursday, October 09, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Mark Cole remembers 40 years ago when his parents took him to the Home Savings and Loan Co. “They walked me in with $5 to open a savings account,” he recalls, and he’s remained a customer.
Cole secured the mortgage to his house from Home Savings and “I have several accounts, personal and business,” the registered representative for American National Insurance Co. says.
The staff at the bank office in Austintown, where he lives, “have always been friends,” Cole says. “You felt like you knew them forever.”
National Healthcare Access Opens New Headquarters

The locally owned company recently relocated its headquarters from Poland to 7422 Southern Blvd., an expansion celebrated Wednesday with a ribbon-cutting.
“We've experienced growth and moved into a new, bigger location that we're really excited about,” says the president of National Healthcare Access, Daniel Caparso. “We were bursting at the seams at our old one.”

Even the people in the room aren’t out of place. Patients come in and wait before they talk to the “doctor,” who is dressed in the requisite white coat, about their concerns and ailments as he or she reviews their charts.

Grow Youngstown Secures $97,000 USDA Grant
Thursday, October 09, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded more than $97,000 in grant money to help local farmers and growers get their products into the hands of the public and into institutions across the Mahoning Valley.
Representatives from Grow Youngstown, an organization formed in 2008 to promote urban gardening, local food production and sales, announced Wednesday that the group received a share of the $52 million in grants recently awarded by USDA to food initiatives across the country that support local growing and farming programs.
Kent State Launches Center for Visual Arts
Thursday, October 09, 2014KENT, Ohio -- Kent State University will celebrate the launch of the new Center for Visual Arts at 4 p.m. today in Cartwright Hall, which overlooks the construction site of the center.
The new center will bring all visual arts programs and disciplines under one roof for the first time since 1960.
Upon completion in the spring of 2016, the $33.5 million complex will have more than 115,000 square feet of space, which include 77,000 square feet of renovation and nearly 38,000 square feet of new construction.

Diverse Projects Keep Valley Architects, Engineers Busy
Wednesday, October 08, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Guided by the new owner’s vision, Phillips/Sekanick Architects is completing its plans to remake the resort long known as the Avalon Inn in Howland Township the Avalon Resort and Spa.
The new owner, Avalon Holdings Inc., has directed the Warren architecture firm to make the hotel and its spacious grounds more than just a place for guests to spend the night.
“We’re completely redoing the entire facility,” says Bruce Sekanick, architect and secretary-treasurer of the firm in Warren. “It’s a comprehensive renovation and expansion of the facility.”
Eastern Gateway Warren Center to Open in January

Higher Education Partner-EGCC Ohio LLC recently finalized its purchase of the Main Street building with owner Marty Cohen. HEP is the college’s partner in the operation of the Valley Center in Youngstown and now will partner with the college for the build-out and operation of the new Warren Center at 239 Main St.
Researchers at NEOMED Study Cardiac Stem Cells
Wednesday, October 08, 2014ROOTSTOWN, Ohio -- On the screen, they’re little more than white, black and gray shapes. Some are long and narrow, others almost perfectly round, giving no hint of the secrets they might hold.
Under a microscope, it’s easier to see what they are: cells, such as a sample taken from a patient about to undergo heart bypass surgery. Some of these cells, the lab workers hope, are stem cells.
