MCCTC Students Look to Future Jobs, Military, College
Wednesday, November 26, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- Emily Moon, a senior at the Mahoning County Career & Technical Center, says that her high school science-based curriculum has helped her decide on what she'd like to do after graduation.
"I'm in biotech, so I'm going into the medical field," Moon said. "There are a lot of opportunities in nursing right now."
She and other students at MCCTC received a sample of the opportunities that await them in post-secondary education or training at the 15th annual College and Trade Fair held at the school Tuesday.

Consumers Federation Sees Grinch Lurking on Horizon
Wednesday, November 26, 2014WASHINGTON -- More consumers are reporting they intend to spend for the holidays than they did last year, a survey finds.
It was conducted for the Consumer Federation of America and Credit Union National Association and compared projected holiday spending in 2014 compared to 2013. This year, 10% of respondents said they expect to spend more while 33% said they would spend less.
Sales of New Vehicles on Fast Track
Wednesday, November 26, 2014WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- Retail sales of new vehicles in the month of November are projected to reach their highest level, 1.1 million units, for the month since 2001, a 5.5% increase on a selling-day adjusted basis, compared with November 2013, say J.D. Power and LMC Automotive.
This November has one fewer selling day than November 2013.
Valley's Foreclosure Rates Decline During September
Tuesday, November 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Foreclosure rates in Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metro area decreased for the month of September over the same period last year, according to newly released data from CoreLogic, a California-based provider of financial data.
The rate of Youngstown-Warren-Boardman area foreclosures among outstanding mortgage loans was 2.15% for the month of September, a decrease of 1.31% compared to September 2013 when the rate was 3.46%.
Salem Seeks Input for Brownfield Redevelopment

Tuesday, November 25, 2014AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- Were you to ask Robert Schmitz three years ago whether horse racing would thrive in the Mahoning Valley, or even throughout Ohio, he'd have given you slim odds.
"Horse racing was at the bottom of the barrel," says the chairman of the Ohio State Racing Commission. "We couldn't have gone any lower than what we were."
However, the passage of legislation approving video lottery terminals, or VLTs, to operate within these racinos proved a turning point for the industry, as evidenced Monday at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course, Schmitz said.

YSU Faculty Reject Contract; Talks to Resume
Tuesday, November 25, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown State University chapter of the Ohio Education Association, which represents the nearly 400 full-time faculty at the university, Monday rejected a three-year collective-bargaining agreement with the university.
Sixty percent of the faculty voted to reject the tentative contract last week accepted by the university Board of Trustees, the YSU-OEA said.
Had the contract been ratified, it would have combined bonuses and pay raises for faculty members but abolished extended teaching service and a cap on summer pay.
