Warren Steel Holdings Roars Back to Life
Tuesday, August 19, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- A piping hot glow radiates across the top of the electric arc furnace at Warren Steel Holdings LLC as it roars into action, melting scrap steel at roughly 3,000 degrees.
Meanwhile, large ladles carrying molten metal are automatically guided across the plant, their contents poured into a continuous caster that produces round steel blooms.
"It's the sound of money," exclaims plant manager John Scheel as he stands just outside the plant, listening to the furnace kick in. "Everybody's happy to be making steel again."
YSU, KSU Get Research Grants from NSF
Tuesday, August 19, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- Youngstown State and Kent State universities have been awarded grants of $200,640 and $347,096, respectively, from the National Science Foundation. Both grants will be used for research, according to an announcement from the office of U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan.
Ruigang Wang, professor at YSU, is providing research to help improve the performance of systems primarily used in the automobile industry to convert carbon monoxide emissions to less harmful substances. The research includes community college faculty from the surrounding region as part of the team.
ValleyCare: Data Stolen about Local Patients
Monday, August 18, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- ValleyCare Health System of Ohio today reported that "limited personal identification data belonging to some patients who were seen at physician practices and clinics affiliated with ValleyCare Health System of Ohio over the past five years was transferred out of our organization in a criminal cyber attack by a foreign-based intruder."
Regional Chamber Cancels Young 2014 Trade Show
Monday, August 18, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber today cancelled its Young 2014 Conference & Tradeshow, attributing its decision to a lack of participation and "the changing nature of the shale industry here."
The event was to take place Sept. 11 at the Covelli Centre and include a job fair for manufacturers seeking skilled workers. It was cancelled "after much consideration and re-evaluation, the chamber said.
Hackers Steal Data from Community Health Systems
Monday, August 18, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Community Health Systems Inc., which operates four hospitals in the Mahoning and Shenango valleys, announced this morning that it was the victim of a data breach targeting nonmedical patient identification data.
CHS, based in Franklin, Tenn., confirms that its computer network had been hit in April and June, the company reported in a filing today with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. CHS operates ValleyCare Health System of Ohio, which operates three hospitals in Mahoning and Trumbull counties, and Sharon Regional Health System in Sharon, Pa.
Peer-to-Peer Lending Makes Inroads in Bank Markets
Monday, August 18, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Peer-to-peer lending is gaining a foothold in the United States. While its market share is small, only about $3.5 billion outstanding, it is growing and two economists at the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland foresee its continued growth.
You haven’t heard of peer-to-peer lending? That’s could be because it’s so new. And because Ohio doesn’t allow it although the state Department of Financial Institutions reviewed this type of lending in 2011, one of the economists, Daniel Kolliner, said last week in a telephone interview.
