YSU, KSU Get Research Grants from NSF
WARREN, Ohio -- Youngstown State and Kent State universities have been awarded grants of $200,640 and $347,096, respectively, from the National Science Foundation. Both grants will be used for research, according to an announcement from the office of U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan.
Ruigang Wang, professor at YSU, is providing research to help improve the performance of systems primarily used in the automobile industry to convert carbon monoxide emissions to less harmful substances. The research includes community college faculty from the surrounding region as part of the team.
Oleg Lavrentovich, professor at Kent State, is researching liquid-crystal advancement, for which the university is already well known. This project addresses challenges regarding the presence of defects in the liquid crystal. Improved understanding of liquid crystal anchoring and defect dynamics will allow for higher resolution, faster display devices, the announcement noted.
“Federal research support from the National Science Foundation is important in providing the funding that can both advance our technology and have an impact on the industries that provide employment,” Ryan said. “I am happy to commend not only the NSF, but professors Wang and Laventovich for their ability to secure this funding and for their research and work with students.”
The National Science Foundation funds research and education in science and engineering, through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements, accounting for about 20% of federal support to academic institutions for basic research.
