Ohio Unemployment Rate Drops to 5.7% in April
Friday, May 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Ohio’s unemployment rate in April was down nearly half a percentage point from the month before, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported this morning, providing political fodder for both political parties.
The 5.7% unemployment rate the state posted in April is down from 6.1% in March, according to the monthly data. In April 2013, the Ohio unemployment rate as 7.3%.
US Fines General Motors $35M for Late Recalls
Friday, May 16, 2014DETROIT -- The federal government today fined General Motors $35 million -- the maximum penalty the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration could impose -- for failing to report in a timely manner the ignition switch defect in Chevrolet Cobalts made at its Lordstown, Ohio, plant, and in its Saturn Ions and similar vehicles.
General Motors posted a statement on its website acknowledging the company has signed a consent order with the NHTSA.
New Business Wants Canines to Look Their Best
Friday, May 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Darlene Donatiello is not going to the dogs. She’s going after their owners.
Donatiello just opened Dar’s Dirty Dogs on Canfield Road in Cornersburg. There she offers four stalls with self-serve tubs that allow owners to wash and dry their dogs that weigh up to 200 pounds. And she has a “groom room” where she’ll shampoo their dogs, shear or shave their fur as requested, clean their ears, the pads of dogs’ feet and clip their toenails. Included is “a spritz of cologne” at the end, she says, and “TLC” throughout.
New Oakhill Evidence Cites Recorded Phone Calls
Friday, May 16, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- A Cleveland law firm was paid "hundreds of thousands of dollars" in legal fees by a businessman or his related businesses to help public officials oppose Mahoning County's purchase of Oakhill Renaissance Place in 2006, an indictment filed by a Cuyahoga County grand jury says.
It's presumed that the businessman is Anthony Cafaro Sr., former president of the Cafaro Co. and its subsidiary, Ohio Valley Mall, based on previous testimony and court transcripts related to a similar case brought against Cafaro and six other defendants four years ago.
