Cafaro Foundation Awards Record Number of Scholarships
Tuesday, May 27, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Two-dozen young scholars from the Mahoning Valley are receiving scholarships from the Cafaro Foundation, and this year the amount of scholarship money climbed to a new high, $57,000.
Trustees of the Cafaro Foundation awarded the scholarship grants based primarily on the students’ academic merit, while also considering their financial need and the recommendations of teachers and guidance counselors, according to an announcement from the foundation. The individual scholarships range in value from $5,000 to $1,000.
Stoneridge Sells Its Wiring Division for $65.7 Million
Tuesday, May 27, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- Stoneridge Inc. is selling the assets of its wiring business segment for $65.7 million to Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd., an India-based manufacturer of products for the automotive industry, the company announced Monday. The purchase agreement includes the assumption of certain liabilities.
Stoneridge said the sale is aligned with its strategy to focus on higher value-added technologies and products, would improve the company’s profit margin and provide resources to fund growth initiatives.

Grads to Receive $4.7 Billion in Commencement Gifts

First Niles Financial Declares 5-Cent Dividend
Tuesday, May 27, 2014NILES, Ohio -- First Niles Financial, Inc., parent company of Home Federal Savings and Loan Association of Niles, will pay a cash dividend of 5 cents per share on common stock and 6 cents per share on preferred class A stock for the second quarter of 2014. The dividend is payable June 20 to shareholders of record June 6.
Home Federal primarily serves the Niles area. At March 31, Home Federal exceeded all its applicable regulatory capital requirements, said its president, Lawrence Safarek.
Hearing Set for Thursday on Ellsworth Township Landfill
Tuesday, May 27, 2014NORTH JACKSON, Ohio -- Remediation plans for the former Hilltop landfill in Ellsworth Township, also known as the Old Toth Landfill, will be the subject of a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. Thursday hosted by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
The information session and public hearing will be at the Ellsworth Township Hall on West Akron-Canfield Road.
The hearing will provide residents with an opportunity to ask questions and submit comments concerning the Ohio EPA’s preferred remediation plan for the 20-acre property.

New-Car Dealers Employed More than 1M Last Year
Saturday, May 24, 2014McLEAN, Va. -- A rebounding economy and rising auto sales are prompting franchised new-car dealerships across the United States to hire both salesman and service technicians, the National Automobile Dealers Association reported Thursday. Employment at the dealerships surpassed one million last year after falling during the Great Recession.
New-car dealers employed 1.008 million in 2013, up 3.4% from 2012, NADA reported. NADA represents nearly 16,000 new-car and -truck dealerships with 32,000 domestic and international franchises.
