Ohio Governor Lobbies Pentagon to Keep Bases Open
Tuesday, July 13, 2004WASHINGTON -- Gov. Bob Taft met with U.S. Department of Defense officials yesterday to express the strength of Ohio's military installations in regards to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure process. In 2001, Congress authorized a new round of military base closings for 2005 that is expected to save more than $3 billion and close up to 25% of U.S. military installations. More than 38,000 jobs are at risk at defense installations in Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Lima, Springfield, Toledo, Mansfield and Vienna Township.
Two Austintown Projects Get State Funding
Tuesday, July 13, 2004COLUMBUS, Ohio -- State Sen. Robert Hagan (D-Youngstown) and State Rep. Ken Carano (D-Austintown) today announced the release of state funding for two projects in Mahoning County. First, the State Controlling Board approved a $20,000 business development grant to YSD Industries. YSD is a subsidiary of Global Railway Industries, a Canadian manufacturer of rail-car components.Global Railway Industries acquired the assets of the former YSD Industries in April and plans for the newly reorganized YSD Industries to be a key growth component of its total business operations.

The patent seeks to solve the problem of searching through hundreds of thousands or millions of electronic documents for a particular word or character string.Carlson and his colleagues, Thomas Kraay and Charles Brisbin, was issued the patent for his work on an algorithm capable of solving the problem of rapidly identifying which documents contain a particular character string from a multitude of documents.

Microsoft Does Best Job of Online Customer Service
Monday, July 12, 2004BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Microsoft takes first prize when it comes to customer service online, according to a report from the Customer Respect Group, an international research and consulting firm that focuses on how corporations treat their customers online. Microsoft achieved a score of 8.7 compared with the average score of 6.2.Supervalu Inc. scored lowest with 2.7.The study assigns a customer respect index rating to each company on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest achievable score.
Consumer Spending Drops, Economic Growth Slows"
Monday, July 12, 2004NEW YORK -- Consumer spending declined sharply in May, with declining real wages, waning tax cuts and falling home prices contributed to the slower growth, according to Deloitte Research's leading index of consumer spending."Reduced housing-related sales and the decline in real wages will produce a slow down in spending by middle-income households," said Carl Steidtmann, chief economist for Deloitte Research. "However, luxury goods retailers should expect better sales from higher income households due to a rise in profit growth and interest income.
