Sales Up in July for Valley Auto Dealers
Thursday, August 14, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Auto dealers in the Mahoning Valley saw sales of new cars and trucks climb 15.7% in July compared to the same month last year, according to the Automobile Dealers Association of Eastern Ohio's latest report.
ADEAO's monthly report shows dealers in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties sold 3,090 new vehicles during the month versus 2,669 sold in July 2013.
The top-selling new model in the three-county region was the Chevrolet Cruze, built at General Motors Co.'s Lordstown complex. Dealers reported they sold 107 new Cruze models last month.
Avalon Holdings Reports 2Q Net Loss of $100,000
Thursday, August 14, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- Avalon Holdings Corp., headquartered in Howland Township, Wednesday reported a second-quarter net loss of $100,000, or three cents per share. This compares with net income of $500,000, or 12 cents per share, for the same quarter a year ago.
Net operating revenues were $13 million compared with $15.7 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2013.
NorTech CEO Looks to Electronics, Energy Sectors
Wednesday, August 13, 2014CLEVELAND -- When Rebecca Bagley became president and CEO of NorTech five years ago, she saw her role as ensuring that northeastern Ohio didn’t miss out in the next technology economy.
“When I was coming in to interview, I got picked up by a driver,” she remembers. “And he was telling me how down and out he was and how this was such a bad place to live.”
That was 2009.
As a candidate to lead NorTech, a nonprofit formed 15 years ago to articulate a regional vision, she empathized with the driver.
Western Reserve Health Foundation Invites Proposals
Wednesday, August 13, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Western Reserve Health Foundation, which awards grants to programs that meet health needs in Mahoning County, is inviting proposals to consider for funding later this year.
WRHF Chairman Phillip Dennison, principal at Packer Thomas & Co., said the foundation has the potential to award up to $500,000 in grants in December. But its decisions will be based on the quality of proposals submitted.
Columbia Pipeline Group to Invest $1.75B in Ohio, W.Va.
Wednesday, August 13, 2014HOUSTON -- Columbia Pipeline Group Tuesday announced it would $1.75 billion in infrastructure that include two significant projects, one of which is construction by Columbia Transmission of a new natural gas pipeline in Ohio and West Virginia.
Columbia Pipeline Group is a unit of NiSource Inc. The pipeline would enhance Columbia’s infrastructure in place and support natural gas supply development in western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio.
Number of Drilled Wells Surpass 1,000 in Utica Play
Wednesday, August 13, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources reports that more than 1,000 wells have been drilled in the Utica shale within eastern Ohio.
Since 2010, 1004 horizontal wells have been drilled in the Utica as of Aug. 9, surpassing the 1,000-mark for the first time.
Of that number, 495 wells are listed as producing, ODNR reported Tuesday.
Last week ODNR issued nine new horizontal well permits for oil and gas exploration in the Utica, eight of which are for wells in Londonderry Township in Guernsey County.
Utica Is Among Fastest Growing Shale Plays
Wednesday, August 13, 2014WASHINGTON -- Natural gas production from the Utica shale within Ohio is expected to increase tenfold from 155 million cubic feet a day in January 2012 to a projected 1.3 billion cubic feet per day by next month, according to a newly released report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
The EIA included Utica results for the first time in its monthly drilling productivity report.
According to the report, the Utica is "one of the fastest growing natural gas production areas of the United States" as evidenced by increased drilling productivity and drilling activity.

Youngstown Metro Area Tops Lowest-Cost List
Wednesday, August 13, 2014WASHINGTON -- The Youngstown-Warren-Boardman metropolitan statistical area again tops the list of lowest-cost metro areas in the country, with a median single-family home price of $78,600. Next lowest is Rockford, Ill., at $85,300.
Rounding out the top five lowest-cost areas are Elmira, N.Y., $87,800; Decatur, Ill., $90,900; and Toledo, Ohio, $95,900, according to the National Association of Realtors.
