Swanston Fund Gives $150K to Fight Childhood Obesity
Thursday, June 12, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- With childhood obesity numbers in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties above the state average, the William Swanston Charitable Fund presented a $150,000 grant June 12 to the Mahoning Valley Healthy Kids Coalition.
Among the members of the coalition are Akron Children's Hospital Mahoning Valley, schools in Mahoning and Trumbull counties the Youngstown Central YMCA.
In Mahoning County, 38.2% of students in third grade are overweight or obese, says Akron Children’s, while the figure in Trumbull County is 43.3%. The state average is 34.7%.
Warren Steel Seeks Lower Electric Rates to Restart Mill
Thursday, June 12, 2014WARREN, Ohio -- Warren Steel Holdings LLC has filed documents with the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio requesting the agency approve a reduction in its electricity rates so it can resume production at its idled mill in Champion Township.
Should the company's request not be approved, it would likely result in the permanent closing of the plant and the loss of more than 180 jobs, Warren Steel says in its filing.
"Warren Steel cannot sustain its current losses indefinitely and needs a competitive electric rate in order to remain in business," the filing states.
Construction Projects Keep Contractors, Trades Busy
Thursday, June 12, 2014HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Two months ago, the lot next to CCL Container Inc.’s production plant here sat empty.
Today the site is bustling with activity as contractors work on the company’s 100,000-square-foot production and warehousing expansion. One building is up while another has its steel frame in place and is being prepared for siding and a new roof.
“We broke ground in mid-March,” reports Greg Koledin, president of Wesex Corp., West Middlesex, Pa., general contractor on the project. “It’s kind of on the fast track.”
Lewis School to Open for Gifted Students

House Committee OKs Funds for 3-D Defense Project
Thursday, June 12, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-13, announced Thursday that his office secured $10 million in federal funds to establish an additive manufacturing innovation research program at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. Ryan, a member of the House Defense Subcommittee on Appropriations, was able to obtain the funds for the program in the fiscal 2015 Defense Appropriations Bill, which passed the committee this week.
Mahoning Departments to Enforce Road Weight Limits

Among those properties is the Southern Park Mall in Boardman, Ohio.
The interactive technology displays will provide customers with a way to navigate the mall they are visiting, find deals, events, promotions and also take relevant information with them on a smartphone or tablet.
Hilcorp Gets More Well Permits for Western Pa.
Wednesday, June 11, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Hilcorp Energy Co. continues to seek oil and gas prospects in western Pennsylvania three months after one of its drilling operations was linked to a spate of small earthquakes that rattled the eastern edge of Mahoning County.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued five new permits to Hilcorp June 3, authorizing the company to drill horizontal wells in Mercer County, the agency reports.
Hilcorp's new wells are targeted for the Wengerd farm in Lackawannock Township, Pa.
