No Marshmallows for Future Manufacturers at Camp

With these words, a two-week program to introduce middle school students to the processes and rewards of manufacturing ended, but organizers hope a lifelong interest in the subject had been sparked.
Twenty-three students from middle schools in the Mahoning Valley participated last week in the second Summer Manufacturing Institute, a program that provides the basics so young people can understand the concepts of manufacturing and how things are made.

Martini Brothers Declare Their Burgers the Best
Thursday, July 31, 2014YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – At the Martini Brothers Burger Bar, familiarity breeds content.
That content starts with a menu of 13 hamburgers. The ideas for their creations -- such as a burger with two grilled cheese sandwiches as buns or a burger that features ham and a pineapple-habanero compote -- begin with familiar ingredients.
The burgers come from the experience and fertile imagination of head chef Joseph Monty who knows the flavors that work well in other dishes. He adapts them to the burger patties the cooks place on the grill.
Advance Auto Parts to Open Store in Canfield
Thursday, July 31, 2014CANFIELD, Ohio -- Advance Auto Parts Inc., the largest retailer in North America of automotive-aftermarket parts, will open a store here Aug. 7 at 10 Manor Hill Drive in the Colonial Plaza.
Desiree Verheyen, a 28-year veteran of automotive-parts sales, is the general manager who works with and oversees 10. She has been with Advance Auto Parts 18 of those 28 years.
The new store offers a wide range of parts and national brands as well as several free services, Advance Auto Parts said in its announcement.
Building Trades Join United Way Sunday for Bike Run
Thursday, July 31, 2014BOARDMAN, Ohio -- The Western Reserve Building and Construction Trades Council will hold its fourth annual Motorcycle Bike Run Sunday to benefit the United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the union hall of Local 66 of the Operating Engineers, 291 McClurg Road. Cost if $15 per rider and $5 per passenger. All proceeds benefit United Way and the AFL-CIO Community Services.
Poll Finds Kasich Leading FitzGerald by 12 Points
Wednesday, July 30, 2014HAMDEN, Conn. -- Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald, the Democratic challenger in the race for Ohio governor, remains largely unknown and is gaining little ground against Republican Gov. John Kasich who leads 48%-36%, finds a newly released poll by Quinnipiac University.
This compares to a 50%-35% Kasich lead in a May 14 survey by the independent Quinnipiac University.

ODNR Issues 20 More Permits for Southern Utica
Wednesday, July 30, 2014COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued 20 new permits for horizontal wells in the Utica shale last week – all in what is considered the southern tier of the oil and gas play.
Oklahoma City-based Gulfport Energy Corp. received six permits -- five for wells in Monroe County and one for a horizontal well in Guernsey County.
Eclipse Resources Inc., based in State College, Pa., was awarded five permits to drill in Guernsey County.
