Building Projects Progress in Downtown Youngstown
Tuesday, May 18, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Youngstown Central Area Community Improvement Corp. will likely extend the deadline to Aug. 1 for P&P Development to firm up financing to rehabilitate the Wells and Armed Forces buildings and the front of the old State Theatre.Upon learning that it took Gregory Vantell Associates, Boardman, until May 12 to appraise those buildings and two others in the downtown, the CIC property committee recommended to its board that it grant the extension when it meets next Tuesday.

Tuesday, May 18, 2004WHEELING, W.Va. -- Two Wheeling-based companies, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. and Herman Strauss Inc., have formed a strategic scrap agreement that makes Herman Strauss the scrap steel operator and exclusive scrap steel provider to Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel. As part of the agreement, Herman Strauss will build, own and operate the scrap facility that will supply all of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel's scrap needs, including for its Electric Arc Furnace.
Dunham's Sports Coming to Hermitage Towne Plaze
Tuesday, May 18, 2004HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Waterford, Mich.-based Dunham's Sports will occupy approximately 21,600 square feet of retail space at Hermitage Towne Plaza, according to plaza owner J.J. Gumberg Co. The new store is expected to open fourth quarter 2004. Dunham's Sports will offer a complete line of sporting goods, athletic equipment, active sports gear and leisure apparel. It will be located on the west end of the shopping center between Kmart and Big Lots.
Rest of Construction Debris near Signal Set for Clean Up

Workers in Ohio Say 'Jobs Crisis' Far From Over
Tuesday, May 18, 2004WASHINGTON -- The jobs crisis is still the No. 1 issue for blue collar, middle class voters in Ohio, according to a survey by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Conducted for the IAM by Fingerhut & Associates, the survey also identifies issues that could decide the outcome of the upcoming presidential election in Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin and Washington."Nearly one fifth of all the workers surveyed reported a job loss in their immediate family during the past two years," said IAM Eastern Territory General Vice President Lynn D. Tucker Jr.

Small Business Optimism Ticks Upward
Monday, May 17, 2004SAN FRANCISCO -- Many of the nation's small business owners apparently aren't letting interest rate concerns and geopolitical uncertainty get them down. Their optimism actually is rising, according to the results from the latest Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index, which rose from 93 to 100. The modest increase in the Index, which measures business confidence and overall market conditions, points to the continued strengthening of small business owner confidence.
E-Business Training Program Offered at YSU
Monday, May 17, 2004YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Ohio companies that want to learn more about improving business efficiency and sales electronically are invited to participate in a new training program called eVantage.On June 2, the Ohio Small Business Development Center at Youngstown State University will begin the 12-week program, which is a multi-phased program designed specifically for small businesses. It is offered through Ohio's Small Business Development Centers and the Ohio Investment In Training Partnership.
